| Post subject: | cam for a fast road 1098 |
Hi guys i am currently building a fast road 1098 , i have a couple of different cams and was wondering which one would be best suited. First off it's a 998 block with a 1098 crank , it's been bored + 100 thou with GR flat top 1100 pistons , i'm running a fully gas flowed 12g295 head which has had about 90thou taken off it . The block has been decked , i'm using a mg metro hif 44 carb and intake manifold and maniflow extractors , the cams i have are all new as are the followers . The cams i have are a piper magnum 270 , kent 276 or a standard mg metro cam , can anyone give me any ideas on which one would be the best for fast road use? |

While I might like the Piper and Kent cams, I,m sure a Wade 104 is going to suite your motor better , Scott " BALLISTIC " from Minitopia can put you in touch with the guys at Wade cams here in Melbourne. |

I introduced the Wade 104 cam profile to Scott recently, he has yet to use one in an engine. Myself & NMP have used the 104 in a lot of our engines, its a great smooth road cam, & used with 1.5 roller rockers can make very good HP. www.wadecams.com |

Give GR a call , he'll grind you up one of the best fast road cams around, the RE13, and if your really nice he might grind up one his new RE283's  , I am currently running this new cam in my 998 that puts out 88bhp at the crank and 80ftlbs of torque and it's a cracker.....  .
p.s and it's alot cheaper than all those other cams

I have a good cam grind I have used in a few similar spec engines to what you have described, Idles quite well with just a small hint of "lump", plenty of torque, engine combo does well side by side with a mild 1275....No, its not a wadecams grind. The cams you have mentioned seem to have quite large lobes and if using an SU, the engine may not create enough vacuum to get the piston in the carb to drop as required when back at idle. They may work quite well in a 1275 but not a small bore especially for street use. Best have a chat with a few people such as GR - Russell Engineering or Lindsay - Minis plus or Matty Reid - The MiniMan or myself - Minitopia and see what you can come up with, we all have our own ideas that are tried and tested that will compliment your engine combo. Snail watch your quotes. Which I'm sure your joking. but for those not sure about the RE13. MY WIFE drives a 1100 with a GR RE13 cam and if it was difficult to drive she would be the first person to complain about it. I have now commitioned Gr to grind me a RE283 for my 998 and I cant wait

We run an RE13 cam in our 1220. Goes really well and very easy to drive. 60hp at the wheels at the dyno day a few weeks ago.

I guess I'm used to driving Mini race cars and road cars with race motors in them. My old blue Clubby was a 1380 with twin 1 3/4 SU's and a cam that didn't 'come on' till about 5000rpm I used to get strange looks at the traffic lights with the Mini rocking side to side with the lumpy cam at idle.

Going back several years I used a KC101 cam in my 1098 (well 1150 I think it was). It went well, and people used to ask if it was a rotary in it at the lights... Madmorrie |

KC101 is a VP3 (same as Camtech 619). Good cam... but lobes are a bit pointy. I ran one for 45,000 hard miles in my 1310 until it trashed the lobes to 1/2 original lift. I guess revving over 8000 a bit and using 1.5 rockers didn't help the life.

I used a KC100 in my 1100 engine years ago, a bit to much for a road car but i did go very well, upset a few 1275 powered cars at Winton. |
