thanx for that i just fitted a 85 in my car as i couldnt find a 83 ,set it up and it started straight away just havent been able to take it for a spin jet as i have to get new rear cylinders. It definately sounds better though.I also ground a section on it it and put 3mm hole on it for lubrication as the lucas one has.only $50

Well done encho.
I did mine but left it hot wired over night to the

Hi, just make sure you have modded the advance plate on the 85 dizzy. Otherwise it will over advance and you risk engine damage.

I fitted one recently and didnt mod the plate, the dizzy was advancing way to much and the engine pinged like crazy.

I drove it for a few days like that not realising how dangerous it was. I have since modded the advance plate and this has made a huge difference.

What sort of static advance are you running?

I've been running a stock 85 dizzy for years now with 6psi of boost and stock compression. On 98 fuel it's never pinged.

You shouldn't need to modify it if you are running relatively low static advance, say around 10 degrees BTDC, but if you have rediculous compression and run low octane fuel then maybe some mods are required.

In standard form the curve is not perfect, with mods you could get them pretty well perfect (stock 85 is very close to a Cooper S dizzy curve but with less total advance) for your engine. However they run pretty good standard in my opinion anyways...

I am running an unmodified 85 in my stock Morris 1100 since 2005 and it has not given any trouble.

GR was offering a special price for Ausmini members - under $50 if I remember rightly, to modify the dizzy curve

Trust me (with a modified cam) it is well worth doing, the increase in bottom and midrange torque is remarkable. 8)

BTW the only decent way to time an engine these days is with a dialback timing light, at say 4000 or so rpm. This lets you see what the maximum advance (which determines power) is.
And by adjusting the light while running, you can check the idle timing (which is way less important) too.

Just setting a 30 or 40 year old dizzy to original static spec from the book and driving away doesn't give best results. Fuels have changed since then, and so has the advance curve in your worn dizzy.

when i first fitted the pulsar DR85 to my mini the SU i had fitted was all setup incorrectly aswell. so the combination of lean mixture and big advance caused massive pinging.

depending on the advance plate they do differ even though it says DR85 on the outside. I bought 3 DR85's at the wreckers and they are all differnet in some way. one had an 15.5 degree advance plate, which if used without mods and with the vac advance connected would possibly cause engine damage due to over advancing. you need to pull the plate out of the dizzy to check which advance you have inside your DR85.

i have modded the advance plate and am now playing with different setups on the carb and am seeing much reduced pinging now, if at all.

the engine i have is very high in compression so fuels have a big effect on the engine aswell. even using premium 98 at most servos i find some must be watered down as detonation becomes more prominent.

i will continue to tinker with it to get it right.

Playing with a gas analyser at work this week i tried a few different needles and springs to get the carb setup a little better than it was. i have just been driving the car as i bought it and recently fitted the pulsar dizzy without mods. after discovering the overall advance was to high i modded the plate and was happier with the result.

i have never been able to completely get rid of pinging though. it seems to change every time i drive the car each day. some days it pings under load at half throttle at 2500-3000 and then goes away after 3500rpm at the same throttle opening.

other times it doesnt ping down low and pings around 3500-4000 at full throttle only. i have tried a few differnet petrol stations thinking possibly it was related to fuel quality. this is not the case i am sure. i use only BP ultimate or shell v power. both premium 98 octane.

i just bought an adjustable advance timing light and after some tests today i am a little confused. i also obtained the vizard a series tuning book and have read this cover to cover already.

setting the idle to 700-800rpm and static timing to 5 degress i am seeing 26 degrees total advance at 4000rpm. test driving the car proves it pings pretty badly at low rpm.

setting the idle to 700-800rpm and static timing to 1-2 degrees i am seeing 22-24 degrees at 4000 rpm. a test drive finds the engine barley pings but is still pinging at this advance amount.

setting the idle to 600-700 for the third test and running the static at 8 degrees i was seeing about 28 degrees at 4000 rpm. a test drive confirmed the engine pinged so bad i couldnt drive over half throttle.

not sure what is causing this problem. i came back after the third test and pulled the dizzy thinking something internally must be at fault. everything is sweet. all good inside no problems there.

i am sure that static timing is pretty standard to be set around 6-10 degrees and the max advance about 30 degrees at 4000 rpm?

scratching my head i am not sure the pulsar dizzy is the right dizzy for this engine. i am tempted to call ken at mini automotive and have him source me the right dizzy for it. although i am an amatuer i am pretty cluey and have been playing with engines and building cars for 15 years or so. i just think i have the wrong dizzy, i am sure it is overadvancing to low in the rev range and is causing the engine to ping at load at low rpm. if i set it so the engine doesnt ping up high, it pings down low, and vice versa. it may be a case of modding the springs or having the dizzy modified by a professional.

any advice would be greatly appreciated guys. i think i am just going to bin it and buy a dizzy designed for the a series engine.

Jason
