Post subject:  Piston Rings

I am currently having some high compression pistons made for a A series engine and i have the option to use whatever rings I like, as the pistons will be machined to suit. I would like to use rings with a thickness of around 1.5mm and would prefer cast iron rings.

I have used AE/Hastings/Omega/Grant/ACL/Perfect circle rings over the years and i would like to know what type of piston rings others have used in there mini engines.

over the years like you i reckon i have used just about every ring made from 1.5mm cast to 0.5 from cosworth but I guess it comes down to what use the engine is going to be used, road engines need to be long lasting hard wearing and i reckon the AE/Hepolites are not bad and easy to get a good size range hastings seem good also, if it is a race engine then maybe some 1mm would be better suited

Thats my 2 cents worth pitty the piston and rings won't cost that

Thanks for your reply feralsprint.

The pistons will be going in a 1330 race motor. I currently use the AE/hepolite rings but i would like to know whats out there in the 1/1.5mm range.

My spies tell me that Grant rings lose tension quickly.

I've had good results over the years with Hepolite (now AE) rings, and Hastings.

Nippon ringsets are good I hear. They are used on Russell Engineering's pistons, and I have a set wrapped round the 73.0mm Hypatecs in my stroker. Only done some dyno time, it's not in a car yet so I can't comment.

No not for Henry, for a rally car I am building.

So have I, Dr mini.

Hepolite rings are 1.3/1.5 & 2.9 but I dont love the 1 piece cast oil control ring, tho most of my engines have used these rings/pistons and i have never had any trouble. I would like a ring set with a 3 piece oil control ring.

Ive never had any trouble with the "Hastings" rings....they have the 3 piece oil control rings you are after.
If you want to get really excited I think they are still available in chromoly :P

What width are the Hastings rings for a 1275 Scott? I have only used them on 998/1100 pistons. (& they were 4 ring, not 3)

If you are using AE pistons you may be limited in what rings you can run.
And AE rings are expensive.
Their grooves are metric sizes, most other Mini pistons about including Hypatec and Russell have imperial groove widths.

Hasting rings are available in chrome with the 3 piece exapander oil ring. I only use these in all the engines I build.
The ring kits are for 4 ring pistons and my supplier[ Auto pro in Gawler] can get either 3 or 4 ring pistons[ hypertec] with either full skirt or cut away .
the price is about the same for any piston/ring combo, small or large bore about $210 the lot.
The only thing I find with the chrome rings is the the re-bore and hone must be spot on to get the rings to seal.
