Hi folks,

Would love some initial thoughts on how much of my engine can be re-used/saved! Been standing for 10 years, before which the main bearings startd to go...

It's an A+ engine with a turbo crank, bored out to 73.5. Concerns I have are:

1) Crank: Flywheel and primary gear end, is this repairable/re-usable? Clearance to primary still seems to be OK so I think it is disscolouration not wear but why? Crank is a turbo so I would like to re-use, but is over ground to +40 already so not much life left in it!
2) Bores: Surface rust, can this be honed out, at it's already 73.5 not much else I can do! BTW measured the bores at 73.35...
3) Pistons: Bad scoring on thrust side, does this matter? can I polish it out or is it new piston time?
4) Flywheel/Backplate: Friction surface was stuck to clutch plate... can this be re-ground?

I know that in the end that I need someone to look closely at all this but at the moment I would like some idea about what I am up against...

Pictures are at:

Any thoughts/help would be great!

1. Measure the diameters where the primary gear runs. The front (bigger) bit looks worn, it should be 1.625". It can be machined down to 1.500" like the rest if it is, and a 998 primary gear used. Has been done lots of times, including by Mick on this forum.
(Check the bushes in the primary gear if reusing it, they may be buggered).
2,3. Bore looks bad to me, I'd get some new 74.0mm pistons (GR has them in stock) and bore the sucker again.
4.Flywheel and backplate can be reground, no problem. Check the assembled height afterwards, as the diaphragm spring must be flat when assembled. Machine the 3 lugs to suit.
See http://www.minimania.com/web/DisplayID/ ... ticleV.cfm
for how to determine this.

What side of Melbourne are you Trog?
Im sure Lindsay @ MinisPlus has some 74 mm pistons for you, it would be best if you go and visit him if your able to to get his opinion re: cranckshaft etc.......Im quite sure he would be only to happy to help you in the right direction and bringing your engine and gearbox back to life :D

I'm north-east, Diamond Creek... Gearbox is OK, I have just finished re-building it. Wanted to try to keep costs down so may build the engine up myself, depends how much it costs for someone to do the work... Thats why I was hoping to re-use the pistons & hone the bores.

I have measured primary gear area on crank at 1.622, and I have a brand new primary gear which I bought back from the UK earlier this year, would this be any good or too noisy?

I am planning to do to the Mini Experience show on the 13th December if I can find a trailer... So maybe I should bring everything along then?

I'd put your new primary gear on the crank and measure the clearance.
Basically though you now have .003" more clearance than stock (which I think was around the same). So it's probably about .006" total now.
It will run OK, but the front bush will wear a bit more quickly. The drop gears may be a bit more noisy too due to the reduced depth of mesh.

This isn't anywhere near the worst I have seen. That accolade goes to Mick's Cooper S he rescued from Tassie.
Somebody had fitted a 998 gear to the S crank (after they removed the front bush). The crank and the gear running steel on steel were not a pretty sight.

PK we are NOT talking about the endfloat here, but the DIAMETRAL clearance. The front diameter on the crank is worn down .003".
Please, read the whole thread first.

Oh crap,, thats what you get for only reading 2/5s of a post hey   I'll withdraw my comment... I was wondering where the hell you were getting those sizes from  Geeesss, I'm normally ranting at others for not reading

Alright Doc,, withdrawing advice on adjusting endfloat

Thanks mate

That crankshaft was a corker...still after machining down the forward journal to a be identical with the rear, the fix was simple. Saved the crank 8)

Yeah I swapped Mick a good 998 gear for that stuffed one.
I could have hard turned it out for a 1275 floating front bush, but the clutch splines on it were too knackered from it going round in orbit. :P
