Hey Dave,

just wondering if you had made any progress on the idea of sticking a modern 5 speed gearset in the mini gearbox?

cheers
michael

that project has been shelved and I am working on a 6 speed sequential gear box in to a remote case.
The gear clusters are going to be either out of honda or kwaka 1000's and I am matching up the std reverse gear to mesh on to the 1st gear like a std set-up.
The bikes have netural between 1st and 2nd and in this postion I am going to use the std selector to engage reverse.
Just have to wait until I get home to finish it. Pity I could not have packed it in my bag and brought it with me.

I'd be happy to test the box under a Nc race engine - just to test the durability hehehehe

Me likey, that under a bike head and turbo charged would be more than a little fun.

Don't get too excited boys as the one I am building is for my T/C engine and it is going to be dry sumped. I am not looking at a set-up for a std engine at this stage as the modification is going to require the whole gut cut out of the box and two new frames welded in. The other thing is it will need a extra drop gear as the bike boxes drive in on one shaft and out on the other.
If it all works on my engine then if some one wants to copy it I will post all the info. As with most of the mods I do they all take time and money , so I am at this stage n ot really interested in building them up. I am just concerntrating on trying to finish off the cars I have started.
If someone else wants to do one then I am happy to give the info I have worked out so far. I can not see why it would not work as the bike gear sets are as strong or stronger than a mini.

just a little update. I got home from dampier and the new honda gear box just arrived from USA. I have not got the whole box assembled yet as I am now in tassie visiting my daughter and grand kids.
I only had enough time to set-up my new tool/cutter grinding attatchment and do the spline on out put shaft to suit mini pinion.
The gear set is out of a 09/10 honda cbr 1000 RR bike and the gear ratios are what I wanted for the eng/box package for my new project car.[After driving around the roads here and bringing back memories of the XC ford 351 I ran here I think next years targa tassie is looking good]
1st is 2.547 :1 and 6th is 1.1:1 so at least it will pull in top gear. The bike output shaft fits into the mini box with two new taper roller bearings. The bike shafts and gears are bigger than mini but the 6 gears fit into the same mounting points. The other input shaft has new end plates to take brgs and the new end plate carrys the drop gears running on double row angular contact brgs. The box is finished off with honda civic ATB diff/CVs and passat drive shafts.
I have finished the basic fit up to the engine which is a 1275 block [-060" O/S] and fitted with 998 crank. The pistons have arrived so when I get home I can get it re-bored to 73mm and with 76mm stroke and SC14 blower it should be interesting.
I have another gear set on order that is same 1st but 6th is .889:1 which would be more suitable to a cruising car but we will see how this one goes.

big bore, short stroke like a motorbike engine. It'll be capable of very high rpm, which will really take advantage of the big volume blower (and breathing capacity of the bike head, David?)

73mm pistons on a standard 81.3mm stroke (1275) gives 1360cc, 73mm pistons on a 76mm stroke gives 1272cc - less capacity, but more capability when used in the right "package" (to quote Matt Read)

So, how do we lose 1/4" in main bearing diameter so the S block can take the 998 crank?? A split bush?? :?

I'd hunt up a Seth Efrikan 1098 crank instead, a la minicranks. Much stronger than a 998 one.

I was hunting for the measurements before but couldn't find anything for a 998 - what main journal size do A+ 998 cranks have?
