I am trying to find out if a Weber DCOE carburetor was ever homologated for use on competition Minis. Some of the vintage racing organizations in the U.S. can be quite fussy when it comes to allowing certain performance enhancing parts to be installed on Minis used for racing. They often expect the owner of a race car to provide documentation showing that a given part, such as a Weber DCOE, was homologated under rules of the FIA and documented using the FIA paper trail. Does anyone know if Minis ever achieved FIA Homologation for Weber DCOE carbies? If Minis did achieve such homologation, it would be nice to know which model years were affected. |

Just quickly googled... a quote from the swiftune site... http://www.swiftune.com/Page/11/competi ... minis.aspx Quote: Power is king for an FIA Mini yet the need to use twin SU carburettors and points ignition doesn't make life easy. and Quote: For those competitors opting to run Weber carburation and electronic ignition in the HSCC and Heritage series Swiftune has developed a specific set-up boosting power to 135bhp.
So i'd be guessing that from that page, then FIA historics pre 65, Weber's are out. |

It does say a Weber was a factory option in the Leyland ST book, no.AKD5096. Maybe that might help. |

I have some homologation papers somewhere. I'll dig them up and see what is listed. I do recall that a weber was listed, but off hand I don't recall what type and what year. |

At one stage in the late 60s in UK they homologated split Webers on a twin SU manifold. The 2 Webers had (ahem) special flanges... ![]() |

Minis did race and rally with Webers. BMC Special Tuning sold Weber kits for Minis. The Australian part number for a Weber kit for a Cooper S is C/HYL7007. Lots of classes for racing and rallying didn't require homologation of parts. When the Minis were running in the Monte in Group 1 they had to run stock HS2 SU carbies. These were the homolgated Group 1 carby. When they run the Monte in Group 2 and Group 5 they could run H4 carbies. You didn't need to run a Homolgated carby you could just run whatever fitted the stock manifold as long as it was from the same manufacturer. Later on they fitted split Webers to the stock manifold. (except they were not really Webers, they were BMC experimental carburettors that looked like Webers because otherwise they would have been cheating. ![]() ![]() Just because BMC sold Weber kits does not mean that they were ever Homologated for Group 1. Looking at one copy of the Homologation papers (out of Peter Brownings book "The Works Minis") for the Cooper S shows the Homolgated carburettors to be the HS2. It shows 8 port heads and alloy 8 port heads for Group 2. There is no mention of carbies for Group 2 because they would have been free under the rules (or almost free!). |

Here are downloadable copies of the UK homologation papers for the Mini. I have the CAMS versions somewhere so I'll come back when I've looked at them. (P.S. - nothing in them about webers) http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.u ... papers.htm If you have a look around that website you'll see an amazing amount of material available for vierwing and downloading, including Australian sales brochures. He also has a copy of my Issigonis-signed postcard that I thought would go well with all the other BMC heritage information. If you've never seen the site I suggest you set aside an hour or two to get through all the material. BMC in Australia is a must-read. |

Thanks, Winabbey, for the lead to the outstanding Mk1 site. I have looked at that site many times, mostly for the Downton section, but never paid any attention to the Homologation paper section until now. I was able to find the relevant FIA paper at http://mk1-performance-conversions.co.uk/pdf/1970%20FIA%20HOMOLOGATION%20-%20MINI.pdf if you notice, this document has an FIA Recognition Number of 5028 This FIA Recognition Number matches with an entry in this document(link below) for the Cooper "S". I used this number(5028) to search on this document(below) and got a match on Mini Cooper "S" http://argent.fia.com/web/fia-public.nsf/916A5D02505BE4CBC125739A003CB227/$FILE/HomologatedForms-SortedByMake&Model.pdf This document also lists numerous Homologation Recognition Numbers which point to Homologation papers for other types of Minis as well as many other cars. One would think that the Royal Auto Club of England would have copies of the BMC/Rover Homologation papers for all of the British cars shown in this listing and that these papers could be looked up by providing the FIA Recognition Number. |
