| Post subject: | Coil over rear end, time to set up |
Hey all As you can see its just a botch job to get the car rolling, now im at the stage where I need to build the rear end properly. I know setting up a rear end like this is just trial and error, how ever I just thought I would ask here to see what peoples suggestions are. No, I wont use a beam axle. Im thinking of just making a new bracket from the bottom of the coil to the three bolts holding the backing plate on. ideas?

Now, I didn't finish my engineering degree, but I have built open wheeler race chassis. You want the coilover to be in a straight line down to the back of the arm where the bolts are. Mounted as you have it, there is a heck of a bending moment there.

That suspension setup won't work. As Doc said, the spring needs to be inline with the hinge direction, ie up/down, forward/back, etc. You'd need to install double wishbone suspension in the same orientation as the front for that to work. In addion to that, the hinge direction of the ends on the springs / shocks are only capable of planar movement, your setup requares full movement. In short: move the shock or fit a front subframe into the back.

Thanks for the tips, ill add that this is how I got the car. Would I be better off just buying something like this: http://www.minisport.com/acatalog/info_ ... AS164.html And be done with it? |

What is in the car is basically what minisport is selling so no need to buy more parts. As above, it's just the angles of operation that need to be considered. Aside from that, if the coil over is straight up then its going to be as hard as possible, if you want it softer then have a curved mounting bracket with multiple bolt points so you can tilt it forward, this will make the spring rate softer, the further it's tilted the softer it will be, see my super dooper pic, right is front of car

The big thing is having the hinges swivel the right way. If you could swap the orientation of the bottom hinge then it would work. Or are other people seeing something im not? |

I thought that too at first, but it still wouldn't work, as the arm goes up and down it keeps changing where it wants the top mount to be. The spring has to be on the plane of movement. |

The spring has to be on the plane of movement. I see, so if you replaced the top mount with a spherical bearing then it would still swivel at the top mount and the bottom mount? Btw the first time i saw the pictures i thought pikey engineering at its finest. |

AS164.html And be done with it? you'd be better off thinking about just what you hope to gain from all of this. and if you decide to go ahead with it, you'd be better off doing your homework so that the spring rates and damping rates are somewhere near what is required. have you ever read Vizard's "How to Modify Your Mini"? You should. He has a section dealing with rear suspension trickery. your photo doesn't show the REST of the car, but is it really worth the work and expense? |

What I hope to gain? I'm just wishing to get my sports sedan to a useable , driveable condition. I have read that book, and I have read up regarding spring rates etc, there is no harm in asking on this public forum what peoples thoughts are regarding coil over set ups. No point in showing pics of the rest of the car, as this is the only thing that's holding me up. Doesn't matter what it costs or how much effort is needed either. |
