Hi!

I stripped all my diffs yesterday and found some pretty rough cast cages, they all looked pretty different. I chose the smoothes cage with the least imperfections and burrs for a rebuild.

Was this sensible or are there other not-so-obvious signs to spot a good casting?

I think I remember reading an good article about spotting good diff cages - but can't remember where

Good ones have no lip inside where the pin goes through.
Early cages let the plain copper washes spin, this wears inside the cage.
I usually mod them (if good) in the mill to take the later tagged washers which don't spin.

Yes, they'r great! However I found one that was pittet where the washer rest's on. Still a much better design, IMO Thanks!

That 8 pin looks great, and obviously you have worked out the perfect setup, have the carby sit directly beneath the diff therefore you dont lose any power in the drivetrain!

What gasket are you using between the carb and diff? You're definately onto something there.

Yes, im slowly coming back... miss my Turbo mini immensly, but there is another project coming (damn houses, kids, wife... so exepnsive!)

Anyone want to swap a rust free mini with 1275 (pre 1972) for a 5 spd, leather, 5.0ltr 210rwkw XR8 ?

Try a honda civic ATB with the 38mm [1 1/2"] bearings I got 2 brand new ones made in USA landed in Aust for under $400 each off ebay.They crop up occasionally, just keep checking.
They suit civic and cvr around 90-98 models and you can get a inner for the triball CV's that will fit the mini drive shaft.
The diff brgs are std 1 1/2" ID x3"OD but need a thin shim to get the right positioning.
They are smaller than the integra diff and the company in USA that makes them have the same diff part number for a mini and the civic.
I am setting mine up with hollow drive shafts[VW passat] and std honda CV's
