Post subject:  Stalling problems- 998 1.25"SU

Hi gang,

Our 998 clubman with 1.25" SU is stalling at the approach to traffic lights, roundabouts etc and is becoming downright dangerous.

The problems occurs when the clutch is depressed, the alternator light comes on and the car stalls. Restarting is not a problem, it starts fine, but as soon as the revs are allowed to drop, she stalls again.

Idle speed is 1000rpm, but slowly drops to 500rpm and then conks out. When the car is warm, she idles a bit erratically but doesn't stall.

It's had a new needle and seat, new needle and main jet, a new distributor, it's got an all new aluminium radiator and water pump and runs a 74degree thermostat.

Mornings here get down to -2 so I'm still thinking that the onset of the cold weather is the factor, any ideas what might be causing us these troubles?

cheers

My van with 998 & 1.5" su was not the happiest of cars while i was living in canberra for any sub zero driving.
I'd be checking the carb & manifold for leaks. Also check the dashpot and see if the piston is moving freely in the chamber as it may be sticking. Also check to see if the choke is fully off when in the off position and double check your points and timing as well.

As a side note on my drives to work in canberra i used to have the butterfly valve freeze up and the daspot covered in ice by the time i got to work. Brr never again

Do you have the std hotbox intake working?
Stock single HS2 and HS4 filters both had provision to draw warm air from above the exhaust manifold in cold weather.
If you are using a pancake sports filter instead, welcome to the joy of using SUs in winter... I had both HS4s on Barney ice up the throttles in the Tassie highlands one year.

Thanks drmini and NAV,

We replaced the std air cleaner with a redline foam filter a while ago... but luckily we did save everything.

I'll have to look at the old gear, but I'm pretty sure it only had an outlet on the underside for the PCV hose to the air cleaner. What should I be looking for?

As a note it has extractors.

I'm in Wagga BTW, so things are only getting worse from here on in!

On an HS2 (Mini Deluxe, Morris 850 etc) you just swivel the intake horn round so it's above the #4 exhaust port on the manifold.

I think I might just do that Dr mini, I've also heard people have blocked off the grille to stop freezing cold air coming in.

I think first stop will be exchanging the 74c thermostat for an 88c one, checking the points and reinstalling the old air cleaner with the 'snout' facing #4 exhaust port.

Try some engine oil in the dashpot. My van runs better with the thicker engine oil... although not an issue in the blue Clubman (not that i've driven it much). Both bog stock 1100's with single HS2's.
