It is just the valve guide that is shattered. I'm not sure how it happened, but it can be easily pressed out with a new one pressed back in in a few minutes if the head is off.

Out of interest, how did you shatter it so badly? Where did the shattered bits end up, were they in the engine?

I turned the image right side up :) It was doing my neck in!

No big drama then, just press the remainder of the guide through and replace it with a new one. it was work that would have been done perhaps anyway with a rebuild. Take a good hard look at the valve as well for wear.

I would look at the condition of all the guides, new standard ones are not expensive.
