Pre-engaged would need a different ring gear (A+) or why not, a lightened flywheel and ring gear? really should be balanced then though.
I assume you can get Hi torq to suit a series ring gear I think Tony (MiniConvertible) up in QLD can sort you!

Wondering if I should upgrade to a hi torque starter motor. Barney seems to labour a little at startup and I think a nice whirring geared starter might do the trick. Ideas? |

Barney already has a new geMini starter, if you are having problems it's time for a new battery mate. It is pre-engaged already, using the early mini ring gear, NOT the later Rover one. This starter spun it like a top when the battery (Exide 550CCA) was new. Maybe Marc changed the battery, or it's had it... C/R on your 1293A+ motor (21251 pistons, slightly decked head) is only about 9.0:1. Spinning it over is not a problem.

Also check your terminals and all power cables going to the starter... and while your at it check all of your earth straps. |

Yeah do tell, but he has to run 38° total advance due to the bathtubbed head shape and big cam. Which means static timing with the GR modded Pulsar dizzy is about 20°BTDC. No, it doesn't ping either.

Will start with a battery then. I know the old man had to give it a charge when I was in Canada as it would run flat about every 10 days. I thought it may have been something to do with the advance, but a battery is a good place to start. |

I put an Exide 550CCA in when we bought it so if that's still there, it's a few years old now. I have the same type battery (same age too) in my 1360/1412 car, this past winter I went very close to changing it for the same reason. But if I drive it once a week it'll survive until May next year.
If you buy a new battery, get the biggest output one that'll fit in there. Similar to what I said above. |

Yeah we'll go for a look, but I'm not going to get a CAMS licence just so I can do some laps.
