Post subject:  Mating A series gearbox to A+ 1275 block

I'm pretty positive this question has been asked before but I couldn't find the answer on here.

I have an A+ 1275 block I am currently rebuilding. I am in need of a gearbox to suit. I have seen a 22G1832 gearbox. My understanding is these are off a Leyland, so not A+. What mods (if any) are required to get this gearbox to mate to the A+ block?

Last question (and perhaps the most contentious) is this gearbox suitable for a high torque motor e.g. turbo 1275 or am I better off trying to get an A+ gearbox and gearset?

Thanks.

Any wide case gearbox will fit, even a 3 syc out of a M1100S. Just make sure you have the correct input gears (Idler & Primary) to suit the gearbox 1st motion shaft.

The 22G1832 is an 'early' rod shift. It will fit any A series Engine, including the A+. Make sure you have a 1275 Primary gear to suit (same as Cooper S and 1100S) as the 998 one won't fit the tail of the 1275 crank.

This gearbox will take high torque engines OK, however if you can get a hold of an A+ gearbox, preferably an early one up to about 1983 / 84 manufacture it will last longer. Be sure to get the transfer housing and drop gears with it too as these are also different.

As far as ratios go, these early A+ have the same ratios as the early Rod Shift and Mini K. You can fit an 18 tooth 1st motion shaft (getting hard to find now) and a Cooper S Laygear (also getting a little thin on the ground) and then you'll have Cooper S MKII Gear ratios, however it will also mean going to the '2 step' type layshaft, which takes away some of the advanages of the A+ gearbox. There are Cooper S style A+ Laygears however these are exceedingly rare.
