Post subject:  Alternator conversions for a mini super small!
i did alot of research today.. Mucking around instead of working..

my findings are, going through books & books!

all the smallest alternators, that you all want to run are all from Kubota mini diggers, they are all cheap as hell from USA new.

search Kubota, mini diggers Alternator world wide, via ebay, some come uprated factory, all 12v, all nippon denso and un-wound, so will work normally, charge normally, not like a race alternators.

they are very small from 30 amps 45amp the bigger type ones come in a 60amp but still very small.

perfect for retro fitting!!

i have listed the ebay sellers, so in future if people search? instead of dead ebay links! search the shop & you will find!

Great links, thanks for the tip. Sure beats buying big, heavy Lucas ones and paying a similar amount to reco them.

In your research, did you find any info on wiring?

Are these a simple two wire installation?

Good on you Nick for doing some serious homework on this. These are a good find, however, there could be a problem with breaking the mounting lugs off.

I only looked at the first link you've put up. These units are designed to run with a flat belt and while the pulley can be changed for a Vee Belt, the flat belts run a much lower tension.

These Alternators (regretably) don't have a back steady and so will tend to twist on the mounting lug and will lead to breakage of the alternator and / or water pump.

Perhaps have another mounting lug welded to the back of it?

It would suffer the same problem. I have seen it when the 'back' bolt on the stock alternator falls out. They go OK for a while, but then the belt starts to slip (from twisting of the mount) and then the alternator light comes on (when its broken).

Don't get me wrong, I like this brain stormng stuff, just need to sort some of the smaller details.

With a properly designed bracket it would work.
The Holden red six used a similar mount on the alternator for about 20 years.

I mentioned this alternator conversion this morning to a college who owns does have several Kobota machines. He has advised that breakage of the mounts is a common fault with them. There is an after market conversion available for them that mounts from 2 points instead of one. He's getting me the details of these. About the same size too.

Bosch made some for Fords and Holdens, that appear to mount the same way, but are considerably stonger.

That one was actually from a XW - XY. There is a lot more meat on the lug where it meets the body and it covers a longer circumference of the body. I didn't have any trouble with this one.

I did try a similar Jap one (Ford Laser?) and it was alway breaking.

But this is not what you were after anyway, NG.

Alot of people have mounted these no problems,
You need to make sure you have a good bracket.

That alternator gt, looks like a huge old brick lol.

These ones are small, light, charge well, internal fan and one wire
Hook up!

Some ideas for people.

mAke a braket to mount from the thermostat
Seen it done looks good, works well.

Alot use a adjustable rose joint as the bottom mount to mount it
Had no problems. What I will copy.

Making a good bracket and not loading on the water pump
It will be fine, if you dOnt firmly mount and support it, it will crack the water pump bracket.

As I said, many have done this conversion no problems, they use these alternators on the big hot rods and chevs. :)

this is good but the bottom mount needs to be better same alternator.

im going to use a rose joint!

just run a pipe between the water pump bracket to the other bracket with a long bolt
I'm also led to believe the bracket underneath that is supplied is a bit thin and a better 1 should be surplied

i had my mounted off one bolt with no issues since i did the writeup they are fairly light and pretty strong. Myabe iv been lucky ?? but i think its fine :wink:
