Post subject:  40mm Dellorto on a 1098

I have a mate who has offered me his 40mm Dellorto off his GTV Alfa.
But is it worth me even considering fitting this to my 1098???
currently its stock running a 1.5" SU.
Will it be any improvement???
Will any possible improvement offset the hassle of setting it up on my engine??

Thanks

Josh and I put one on Spiro the Moke (1152cc) ages ago, at ausmini dyno day a few years back it made 47HP ATW. And the engine was tired..

It depends what you want and how you drive-
You want great part-throttle response, carby noise (music) good power and poorer economy, fit one. They do stay in tune better than SUs, too.

If you want it quiet, boring and economical with less power, stick to an HS4.

You would have to source a manifold anyway, so I would rather keep the HS4 and buy a good manifold for that.

Each has their place, but an SU is better suited for most driving conditions.

One of the best things we ever did to that engine...i love the response and sound they make 8)

Only thing better is TWO of them sticking out the front

You might grab a bit more peak power but it will sound faster regardless...if none of that bothers you as Kev said stick with the SU.

well, that sounds like it might be a good thing then. :D

I'll run my HS4 for now, and look around for a manifold to suit and mabe change it over some time in the future. 8)

Thanks Guys :D :D

How does an SU go out of tune?

Hmmm.... let me count the ways...
throttle shaft wears and lets air in.
floating needle wears itself and the main jet in 10-20,000km.
needle valve and seat setup is crap design compared to the others, worse now with 1 piece chinese nylon floats.
pistons stick in the bell if/when they get dust in there.
if you have 2, they can get out of synch.
etc etc.

If Morris hadn't bought Skinners Union way back when, Minis would probably have something else on.

So if i'm going to run this dellorto on my otherwise stock 1098, but I don't want to cut my firewall, What are my options for manifold and filter?
I did a search and read thu a few threads, but i'm still a bit confused.

Redline 3005 manifold
or Minispares 3.5" Weber manifold
or Lynx Weber manifold, either their short angled one or the dreaded gooseneck.. (both are NLA new)
Ramflo filter (preferably with a Unifilter LNX400 foam pad), or 2 short trumpets and Unifilter socks.

All these will fit without any firewall surgery.

Will I need to upgrade my fuel pump to electric, or will it be okay with the new mechanical one I am running now?

It will cope OK, but I usually recommend fit a square Facet electric one.

Webers/Dellos have two butterflies to wear/cause problems.
Bushed throttle shaft will always wear - something that Webers also do.
Floating needle, sure. But most modified run fixed needles anyway.
Needle valve and seat is crap, yep it is - but so is having jets fill with rubbish fuels - the major contributor.

etc!
