Post subject:  More Power?

G'day all,

I'm new to here, so sorry if I'm flogging a dead horse with this topic, I tried searching for the same topic but failed to find anything quite the same.

Anyway, what I was wanting to know its how people have gone about putting more oomph into their minis, and how well said measures have worked. What do people think is the best way to jput more power into a 998cc engine?

I'm read a bit on turbochariging, supercharging, replacing the exhaust, toying with the carby, swapping the engine... how have people found doing one or the other and would they recommend it? What I really need to know is how to get a bit nicer acceleration out of my '78 Clubman 998cc (keeping in mind it usually has two 80kg guys sitting in it :P) and how to make it lag less when negotiating hills.

Your thoughts?

Ta :)

Anything is possible if you have the right money. Try staying with the std mini (1275)stuff if your budget is reasonable. If your good with mechanics and have the tools then running a s-charger may be the next step. Finally if cash is not an issue go the engine swap.
Best things about an engine swap:
Reliability
Big HP comparitively
Extra gears
Unleaded

Ok, well, let me rephrase :P

What would people recommend in order to increase the power of a fairly standard 998cc Mini Clubman (already modified to take unleaded) within about a 3,000 dollar budget? more if they include non-specialist parts (i.e not mini only).

Machine the head out

I would add an 1100 crank to that list (provided there was no reason for keeping it a 998)

Has anyone had this done? http://www.miniandmokeworld.com.au/engine.asp

It looks pretty sweet, can anyone recommend it? are there better value alternatives?

Yep, got one of them. The gearbox is about to blowup (18000km) and it took ages for me get the fuel mixture right (think its still out a bit) as they mod the cam. I will need to get it dynoed to get it spot on when I get some funds and time.
Mine is a 998 with a 1098 crank, it is very good down low but seems to missing something over 100km/h (think it could be fuel)
They were very helpful at time of purchuse.

I've heard they are real dear. I bet you could rebuild it yourself, far cheaper. Or shop it to an engine reconditioner.

Myself I would outsourse the details and rebuild myself. There is enought info in this site to helpout or just ask questions...But what does determon is the time factor you have  6-8 weeks you can do it yourself with a little help if you have not not it before

Yeah, my problem will end up being that I use the car to drive around all week, I can spare if for a week or two max, really.

Ok, one question: Is it worth upgrading my current engine with say, a 40mm weber , new exhaust and extractors etc. now, or should I save up and replace the engine, then upgrade that?

Also, if people think Mini and Moke world are a bit dear, are there any professional places that might perhaps do it cheaper? I can get custom made exhaust easily enough, so I'm mainly asking about somewhere in Sydney werew the mechanics know what they're doing under the hood of a mini (errr... experience with minis, really)?

Ta for all your help so far guys, I'm definalty looking at grabbing a Weber carby, 40mm if I leave it 998cc, or bigger if I go bigger (and have the space :P)

From memory about $3300 with gearbox. I will dig the paperwork tonight and have a look.
