What year ford mondeo do I need to find in the wreckers for the edis 4 bits for a megajolt conversion?

What other cars are suitable?
Surely their are other 4 cylinder cars with trigger wheels, sensor, ignition modules and a computer to control it all....

Its the megasquirt ECU that can be moet economicaly used with the mega jolt computer.

You would be silly to use a standard computer from any old car as they are tuned for that particular cars economy and would cost lots to re flash it and even then the computer would require the rest of the cars functions to be present or it would get confused and not work.

Well thats a quick way of explaining it anyway.

correct, there are others that do it... the megajolt is the cheapest and easiest, and gives you full programmable control.

The megajolt (& megasquirt and others) use the Ford EDIS (electronic distributorless ignition system) to control the coil, and to read the crank angle sensor.

The EDIS is really easy to control, it outputs the engine speed, which the ignition computer reads to decide what timing advance and then the ignition computer tells the EDIS when to fire the coil.

There are plenty of Fords that run EDIS, but the Mondeo is the only 4 cylinder we got out here.



'94 - '95 to be safe, but it's gotta be an automatic. The EDIS is really obvious, it's screwed to the centre of the firewall. Make sure you get the plug and a few inches of the loom

my local Ford wreckers has the 'kit', I got them to pull it off a car for someone a while ago but he changed his mind. They'll charge $110 for it

The Edis 4 module will have to come off a Mondeo, but that's the only Mondeo bit I run. I use a Hyundai x3 excel coil pack (takes normal ignition leads, cheap too), Ford EF falcon crank angle sensor and Ben's trigger wheel.

I use megasquirt 2 to run it all (as I have other future plans...), but if I was going to go ignition only, i'd be running megajolt.

I need to go and pick up one of those - my mondeo coil pack is getting corrosion inside the terminals... and it just looks horrible hanging of the front of the motor

I just paid $28 for my coil pack and module, also brought all the chrome off a wrecked Alfa gtv so they gave me the falcon vr sensor for free.

Interesting, how do you wire in the excel coil pack (which colour goes to which, compared to the ford coil pack)?

Dunno, but Andrew might be able to rattle it off. I'll figure it out as soon as I get one

it ought to be pretty simple though, in both cases you have two coils side-by-side, and a trigger wire for each. Each coil has two HT terminals that fire together, so if it doesn't run, then you have the trigger wires on the wrong coil. The common 12v is the other wire, and would be pretty obvious (it's the middle one on the Ford coil - I'd expect any other to be the same)

Actually its a little different for the Excel coil, the +12v wire is on one side of the connector, middle is cyl 1&4 coil, other side is cyl 3&2, I drew a little diagram to explain it all, as the wiring changes colour either side of the connector for the coil, so thought it may get a little confusing...



Here's a pic of the 2 coils side by side, the Excel one isn't much smaller, but a better suited shape for what I want to do, and it's a lot easier/cheaper to find new or used. The metal bracket can be removed (I'm using it as is at the moment)
