Post subject:  Rebuilding a 998 Cooper engine

Having just bought myself a 1965 Morris Cooper 998 I am looking to have the engine rebuilt and am in need of advice and direction as to what could be done to give it more torque as living in Toowoomba where level roads are in the minority it seemed logical to go that direction.

I am not interested in increasing the engine size or going to turbo, twin cam or whatever else is available. It will be used mainly at weekends and will sit in the garage for months at a time as I work overseas.

So what could be done to make the engine more energetic. Your thoughts and ideas would be most welcome. I know the subject has been raised recently but the thread seemed to digress into changing the engine and/or fitting a turbo / twin cam. I would much rather see what could be done with the engine already fitted.

Big head mods, different cam and carby/webber upgrades or mods.
Also what diff dose it have 3.44 or higher will give you more rev range/more gears to play with but it will kill your top end speed.

I haven't tried a lightened flywheel on a 998, I have on a 1275 however and loved it.

I reckon it could only be a benefit on acceleration, but what about the initial take off? Would it be a pain in the arse?

I am only looking to drive around Toowoomba and go watch the street sprints around the area, got no intentions of touring or much in the way of highway driving.

Haven't had much time to look at the car, bought it on a Saturday, got it on a Sunday went to work Monday but I did get to drive it into the garage. lol

It has either twin 1.25 or 1.5 SU carbies and S front discs with a booster but other than that it is standard Cooper, was rebuilt in 91/92 and untouched since then.

It is Dark Green white roof the plate says Cedar Green but don't know how close that is to the colour now.

So what is suggested for a head, carbie etc etc.

When I was driving / racing in Scotland back in the early 60's if you wanted to modify your engine you sent a money order to Speedwell, Minisprint, Downton or even direct to John Cooper and got yourself a stage 1, 2 or 3 upgrade. It didn't matter if you had an 850, a Cooper or an S.

Nowadays there is so much on offer for enthusiasts to choose from, old guys like me who have come back to Mini's find it a bit daunting when trying to decide what to do with engine upgrades.

What head should I be looking to get then have modified, what carb is better than twin Su's, in my day a 45 Weber was the one to have, is this still the case.

Where is the best place to source what is needed. Before I turn up at an engine builder I need some idea of what I should be asking for. Who is the best engine guy around the Brisvegas area that could build me a top class engine.

Any info on any area of what I need help with is most welcome.
