It will be your aluminum rocker cover which is without a breather causing the problem here. You could go back to a stock rocker cover with a breather on it, but there are also other ways to fix this if you want to keep the cover. The breathers allow the blow-by gasses released from the cylinders under combustion to be released to the atmosphere, or sucked into the intake to be reburnt. You have a single breather on the engine above the clutch cover. Here: ![]() You have a port on your carb which will draw in the emissions and burn them in the engine. This will reduce pressure inside the engine and allow the gasses somewhere to go a little easier. Here: ![]() There should be another breather that looks a little like the one above, but fitted below the carb on your left end side of the engine. There's a cover with a single bolt in it. If it does not have a cover fitted, then you can get one and put it on with a new gasket and mounting bolt seal. ![]() the easiest way is to change the rocker cover out, but sorting out the breathers on your car will help all around. All unblocked ports on your carb should be blanked or put to use. I think I can see a vacuum port as well that is unblocked. |

I think most people on this forum agree that the Valvoline XLD Classic is quite a good cheap oil for a mini. Some say that Castrol Edge 25W/50 is the best, but it's also quite expensive... Wait until supercheap/ autobarn have a sale - you can sometimes get the valvoline for $10 a bottle. |

I wouldn't be too quick to block all the ports on that carb though, i'm pretty sure the lower port is to do with the fuel bowl isn't it? But the port Mick has nicely drawn an arrow to should either be blocked up or used as mick explained. |

Yes, you're right Matt. Don't block the fuel bowl breather, but it should technically be run to the charcoal canister. The other open port I was alluding to is the vacuum port in the top center of the carb flange. it looks as if the 1/8th vacuum line has been cut off? |

looks like maybe a rubber cap is on it. |

Ok, black canister in the corner is the charcoal canister. It absorbs fuel vapour from the fuel tank instead of letting it escape to atmosphere. The green arrow, small line, is the vent line from the fuel tank for the vapour. If you look in the boot at the fuel tank, there should be a line coming out of the top of the fuel tank, which is the vent line. The open hole at the bottom of the canister is normal I believe. The hose that goes nowhere will need to go to the carby. This hose then draws the vapours out of the canister and into the carby to be burnt. I THINK it goes to the brass connection on the r/h side of the carby pointing up at 45 degrees. So the carby constantly draws air from the canister, which constantly draws oil vapour / blowby from the hose connected to the top of the flame trap on top of the clutch housing. This should draw the air through you oil filler cap and into the engine and then out the flame trap! Cheers Shane |

That brass connection on the right hand side of the carby looks like it has been soldered up. Is that so? ![]() If it has been, it has been done chasing performance figures. You will need to have your engine vents go to a catch can, which is pretty much what it is doing now, and continue wiping the oil from the top of the engine periodically. You can always still fit a vented rocker cover and feed it to the catch can as well which will relieve the oil stains around the top of the engine. That is, unless you feel the need to unblock the port. You would be best speaking to GR about this as it will affect the tuning. |

if I add a oil catch can will this solve my problem ? And is this the best way to do it. ![]() |

No, the same problem will still remain. There is pressure buildup at the top of the engine which is being released through the small hole in the cap with whatever oil mist is there at the time. You need to create a vent at the top there through either: a. replace the rocker cover with a vented one b. create a vent in the top cover (perhaps a threaded barb, or tig weld in a sort stub of 3/8 tube) c. install a rear tappet chest vented cover. |
