Post subject:  DHLA45 Dellorto on 1098?

Hi guys, I know I ask heps of questions for a newbie on the forum, so why not ask another one!
I tried the search function but coudltn find what I was after.

so I kind of have two projects on the go now.

a 1098 into my primerd deluxe body fast paced done dirt cheap build

and my 1360 in my 850, super long term bank emptying build that will probably take another 3 years or more.

I curently have a 450DCOE dellorto carbie on the 1360, seenig as the 1360 will be getting a new head and fuel injection. . . and the single SU on the 1098 being stuffed.. . why not put the dellorto on the 1098?

initialy this wasnt an option as i thought i has a 998 untill I was told it was a 1098 *YAY!*

what is the best way to setup the 1098 with the dellorto, not so much for power but to still give me decent economy and a powerful enough drive to not feel like I am driving a lory up a steep hill?

I have a set of extractors for the 1098 also. from what I know, no other work has been doen to the 1098.

or am I better off trying to swap/sell the dellorto and get twin su's?

Thanks
Leroy.

I assume you've got a Dellorto DHLA45 (45mm) rather than a 45DCOE, as that's a Weber?

hmmm, I may need to check then, as i was told Dellorto DCOE45. . . . previous owner was adament it was dellorto so chances are its a DHLA45 then. . .

Dellorto DHLA45 can be made to work on a 1098, but I'd not put bigger than 32mm choke tubes in it.
I would keep the same emulsion tubes you have, fit 32mm chokes and start off with 140 main jets and 180 air correctors.

I've done a couple of motors over the years with DHLA40s and they went OK.

would I be better off trying to swap it for a set of twin SU's then?

is my consumption going to be as awfull as it was on the 1360? if so i may steer clear. . the 1360 was comming on 20l/100km :S

A single 1 1/2 or 1 3/4 su would be fine, the 1098 doesn't need any more than that. I wouldn't bother with twin su's either spend the time and money getting the Dellorto running or just pick up a su carby and set that up like factory std.

that was another thought, i have the standard carbie, but tis stuffed, 0 oil in it and the piston thing (sorry im not good with carbies) is jammed up, would a rebuild kit through the SU be enough to sort it out then?

just be a shame to let the dellorto go to waste, but if its too big then its pointless to run it :)

Thanks

I ran a dellorto 45 on a 1100 for a couple of years. As said by Kev it does need some work to get it to run right. I now run the same dellorto on the 1330.

It isn't a simple matter of bolt on, you have to have the manifold kicked up a few degrees to get it to fit. Also the issue of linkages etc. But otherwise it's a great soundtrack!

Running chokes 34mm or smaller, a 40 Dellorto or Weber outflows a 45 Dellorto or Weber.
[BTW 34 chokes is about as big as a 40 can use].

But if you've got a 45, why not run with it.
Fuel economy isn't that horrendous, IF it is jetted for the street rather than high rpm HP numbers.

You'll have to re choke and re jet the 45 so a suggestion may be to get a 40 and use that. I have 2 DCOE40 carbs that I got relatively cheaply as they are missing some bits like jets so they are around.

Ill part with mine for what I paid if you choose to go that route.

I wouldnt go out and buy a Dellorto or Webber, im only asking the question as I have efectively a spare 45 Dellorto :)

Looks like I may be best off having the knackerd SU rebuilt, but then again if its cheeaper to get the new chokes and jets for the Dellorto? . . .

I'd put 32mm chokes in the Dellorto. They are not that dear.
Once jetted right it will stay in tune.

Parts like choke tubes are iffy to get here sometimes, so I buy parts & jets from from http://www.dellorto.co.uk.

Chokes are GBP15.70 ea, + postage.

Post subject:  Re: DHLA45 Dellorto on 1098?

okay So I am going to bump this little thread up again with another question rather than a new thread. .

what sort of consumption figures L/100km should i expect from a presumed stock 1098 with extractors and the aforementioned Dellorto?
and how will it differ from consumption if I was to say get a stock carbie to put on it?
with rising fuel prices and considering i have 0 need for this car to be fast, I have the triumph for that and/or the 1360 mini, this one is purely going to be a daily drive and run around car and a commuter for when i don't feel like riding the bike (today would have been one of those days if i had it running! my fingers froze to the handlebars!!!)

I get about 5.7L/100Km on the bike (yeah to to fuel efficient but she makes good power :P) and about 11L/100km in the Defender on Diesel. . when the 1360cc mini was going I was lucky if I got 20L/100km with the Dellorto how it is :S so. . . what should i be expecting from the 1098?

Post subject:  Re: DHLA45 Dellorto on 1098?

I have no idea what economy I get with the Dellorto on my 1360, but since I rejetted it to be 12.5:1 A/F ratio at full throttle, it is way better. You can expect to use a bit more than an SU, if it's using 2x as much you are running too rich.

Danny's 1098 Moke (40 Weber) was running at 10.8-11.0:1 A/F full throttle yesterday. It has 150 main jets in. Too rich.. he's now buying some 140s and 145s.

[edit] I have edited this post, as when written I had unfairly attributed this Weber richness to a Mini shop's tuning. However, I was not then in full possession of the facts, so I apologise unreservedly to those concerned..
