Post subject:  12x6 wheels and 1100 engine questions

My apologies if this is in the wrong section of the forum guys

Couple of unrelated questions, decided it'd be easier than starting two seperate threads.

First of all, my new wheels are here! Well not in my possession, but they landed in Auckland last week and are now on their way to Dunedin. They are Japanese 12x6 SSR Formula Mesh, and are about +12 offset if I remember right. With a 165/60 tyre fitted, can anyone tell me what type of flare would suit them best? I don't want the flares to overhang too much so the smallest size possible would be great, the standard plastic ones ideally, or Wood & Pickett, but if I have to go bigger, obviously I will, just don't want to go out and buy flares only to find i'm still not legal after fitting them, or not being happy with them as they're too big

Secondly, I've been offered a standard 1100 Clubman motor for a good price, it's condition is unknown as it's been sitting in a car at a wreckers for a few years but as I intend to tickle whatever motor I buy a little bit this isn't an issue, as at the very least a strip down and inspection would be done anyway. Do they offer much more power and torque than a mildly worked 998? By mildly worked I mean a Stage 1 kit (exhaust, filter, carb needle, extractors, inlet manifold), as well as a set of roller rockers and possibly a mild cam. Would these mods on the 1100 offer much more than what the 998 would put out? I've been told 1100s are quite weak, and don't like high revs (not that I intend to build a screamer), is this true? Reason I ask is because 1275s in good nick seem to be very difficult to come by now, my 998 is getting tired and I want something already freshened up that can simply be dropped in in place of it before it does decide it's had enough. If anyone can shed some light on this, I'd be very appreciative, as there doesn't seem to be much information on, or support for, the old 1098

1100s with the right bits can be made go very well they are more torque monsters than powerhouses. the 998 and 1098 share the same bore. but the 1098 has a bigger crank (both are interchangable)
the second mini clubman I owned( in dunedin) had a mild 1098 . i.e cam, head, straight pipe and muffler along with an HS4 carb
i could do a power skid from the octagon tho the lights at moana pool in second gear with ease ( going up hill mind you and dont try that these days, you will get in the poo with the 5-OH!, nor do i condone such behaviour these days)

i say go for it but be prepared for what ever old engine you buy these days good or bad to spend a few grand on a recon

I'd even spend the money if I was deadset on having a dirty nissan RB engine
just my $0.02

Yeah recon is definitely on the cards regardless of what I buy.

Why you bring up RB's!? I miss my Skyline :(

Ha yeah i'm just playing with ya :P

So the only difference in the 998 and 1098 is the stroke length (because of crank) and piston height? I take it that means they share the same heads and everything else?

yep thats right you could make your 998 into a 1098 by changing the crank

Good to know! I'll probably buy the complete motor, tear down and inspect, then go from there.

That said, my 998's proven bulletproof so far, so I doubt the 1100 would take much to get running or need much work, unless it's been abused...

Sitting in what appears to be an old race car at the moment, one piece front end etc, sorry state though.

An 1100 will always have an advantage over a 998.
Stock horsepower was 40 for the 998 and 50 for the 1100.
Whatever you do to a 998 will work on an 1100 and you will still be 10 hp in front with the 1100.

An 1100 comes with a better head standard too - a 12G202 compared to a 12A1456 on the 998

Graham Russel did a good three part article on an 1100 engine

Which is also on minimania, which I find easier to read

I'd hold fire on the arches until you have the rims fitted up. I am in a similar situation, but have 10X6's. Everything I had read indicated I would need a wider than standard flare, so had my heart set on the W&P, as I love the idea of hidden screws. However I did a test fit today on the front, but with no engine in place so suspension geometry all screwed up, and it's looking like the standard little flares might be enough.

I'm wondering if the issue is that all the info about likely size is aussie or UK based, and we are allowed to show a little more rubber over here (only tread has to be covered, sidewall can show when looking straight down). Anywho I'd wait.

+15 on a 6 inch should fit under group 2 or W&P arches, but hold on until you test fit them. I have +3 in 10x6 and they protrude about 10-12mm.

They arrived today :D test fit this weekend hopefully. 10-12mm certainly doesn't sound like much at all, is that from the flat of the guard, the seam or the flare itself?
