Post subject:  Disc Brakes and Wheel Arches: the real deal
Hi guys,

So i went to pick and pay less on the weekend and drooled over a pair of honda city brakes, disk, caliper and new pads. I forgot to bring the impact screw driver so I couldn't remove the bastards off the car :cry:

I will be going back this weekend to try my luck again.

Questions:
Is it true that if I stick these on my mini and get them to fit etc, the wheels will stick out an extra 1" on each side??? I am confused as all the pics in my Cooper book show original Coopers with their 7.5inch brakes being devoid of wheel arches!

My overall goal is not to resort to wheel arches at all but still get disc brakes. I would rather stay with drums if it means I need to get wheel arches. I personally hate wheel arches and would wreck my car's overall image (passive performance).

Can i get the honda rotors and buy cooper original calipers? or some combination like that and end up with discs but not needing wheel arches?

So what is the deal??? if i install honda discs will I need to get wheel arches? :?

Oh Sh!t i just read the whole "Honda discs" thread and it's too friggin complicated!!! redrill! stress on axle!!! :cry:

What if I replaced the front CV joints with cooper disc bake CV's? will the disc's fit in then?

Heck just FORGET IT! performance drums or $2500 7.5" Coopers for me!!! :oops: :(

DrMini- I'll pay you to put the honda discs into my car! I will supply all the parts! how about it???

dont fit cooper s cvs etc,
all u need to upgrade is the bearings to timken rollers ;) drmini wont do em for you, to much legal sh1t :(

Ahhh bugga it completely! :cry: I am totally turned off by the thought of having to stuff around with the discs. I'll just install the Cooper S lot when i save $2500! :shock:

If you fit Honda discs and 25mm spacers the wheels will be in the same place they would with 7.5" S discs.
But you'll have an extra $2K in yer pocket.. :wink:

But I thought that only 12" wheels would fit over the Honda disks :?:

Can you buy Cooper S off set 12" wheels, and if so how much are you really saving to change them over :roll:

You can turn the Honda discs down to 7.9" and they will go into 10" mags, but not 10" steels.
Or, you can fit them into 12" mags without turning them down (you get the full 9" deal.. :wink: )
Either way you will need flares of some sort. They were not designed to cram inside a 10" steel wheel like the Cooper and S disc brakes are. There is bugger all room inside there...

So let me make sure I understand: even if you machine the honda discs down to 7.9" and use 25mm spacers, you will still need flares? :?:

Yes..
I just used the Innocenti $65/set screw-on ones on my `matic shell, same body as your Deluxe. I don't think they look too bad- see my avatar at left. 8)

<edit> even if you fit S 4.5" wheels and brakes, without flares they are barely legal, and ARE illegal in SA....

Hi,

Using the honda disc at full size you should be able to fit 12 x 4.5 Rover Cooper wheels or standard late 12" Mini wheels. You may need a small spacer for clearance, but the wheels should still fit under the guards without flares.

The 13 x5.5 hotwire mags and 185/60 x 13 tyres I bought for my Auto-Moke stuck out of the guards about 1/2" with spacer drums! :shock:

So I've now fitted standard (non-spacer) drums on the back and am in the process of making up a Honda City Disk setup for the front (at full size) without spacers. This brings the wheels back under the guards. Looks Mad! :D

12.5 x 4.5inch Rover Cooper wheels and standard honda discs = no wheel arches??? That's perfect!!!

I was ideally hoping to keep the 10x5 contessa's (as they are C L A S S I C 8) ) but boy, I'd sure love discs...

Then again today i drove the baby to Mini Car Clinic Padstow (BTW if you haven't been, it's worthwhile! Mini Heaven...) and back and i reckon the drums aren't bad, i must admit... maybe I should wait until the day I install a 1275cc? hrmmm

Do you have to run the spacer with the honda disc brakes so that the mini wheel clears the caliper :?:

or.....

Do you just use it to make them the same offset as the Cooper S :roll:

I think you will need the spacers to clear the caliper. I'll look at a 12" Performance magged Clubbie with 9" Hondas tomorrow, and stick my trusty tape in there..

I got away with using 19mm spacers on my Clubbie, but it has 10x5" Speedy wheels which have about 5mm more offset. :wink:

With a 10x4.5" S wheel, you would need 40mm spacers so the caliper misses the well in the rim. I measured it..

OK here's the good news..
This applies to 12x5 Performance mags..
I measured from the claw on the caliper out to the inside of the spokes, and with the 25mm spacer in there, it measured about 38mm. So YES it looks like you could fit these mags and 9" Civic discs without any spacers. They would be just about legal.
On the rear, it `looks' like they would clear using standard Deluxe drums. But I'd try before I buy.. :lol:

I can confirm no clearance problems with 13 x5.5 hotwires or standard 13 x 4.5 Moke rims using 8.4" Honda City disks and no spacer. 8)
