alrighty, as I mentoiend before I found a rover a+ auto.. 800 without anciliaries so pretty happy.

Should I keep it Spi or just put my carb on it? I'm leaning towards carb a bit. Keep it simple. lol what'll make a bit more power if any?I imagine injected is more drivable but my wife knows how to use the choke and all that.


Also, what top speed does the rover auto get? I'm going to be using the rover shifter also with the park feature. Might look a bit out of place on the 68 but it'll do.

Also, what mods would you suggest for the auto? obviously I dont want to blow the box up trying to squeeze too much out of it. But would like it to go nicely.



and lastly for now, can the rover auto be shifted like the a series auto? where in its 1/2/3/4/D and you can shift it like a manual?

I imagine the rover auto still has a kickdown rod though? so that still limts my carb choices?

Firstly, have you got the front sub frame for your model, the rover one is different and would need modifying to fit. Having an SPI, I'd suggest going carby, there's not a lot you can do with SPI's n the way of 'hotting' them up. Whatever carby (s) you use, you should be able to Fab a kick down linkage. Probably worth getting trans checked before fitting and maybe fitting an oil cooler to help auto/engine. Someone else might be able to advise you on that point as I've only had standard 1275 autos.

I would not bother with an oil cooler. Fit a Minimatic heater like the autos had here (or hang a Clubby heater core behind the grille).
The Oz MiniMatic drivers handbook [paraphrased] says `the heater is an essential part of the cooling system on an automatic'.

Don't even try and fit an oil cooler to an AP auto. It will end badly.
These things run very high oil pressures.

Just curious about the oil pressure, is it just the transmission or engine too?

The oil pressure at the minimatic or Rover auto's filter is around 150psi. People have tried to adapt spin-on filters, and blown them up.
The pressure in the motor itself gets regulated by the relief valve down to ~75psi.

Yes a Rover auto should drop right in.
`Matic already had the motor moved forward (compared to a manual) same as a Rover is.

Sweet. I'll use the carb of the 998. Which I think is the 1 1/2 and run it carb. Maybe just put an exhaust.

Dr mini will your pistons work on it? Not after a racecar out of it. Just some more go lol

Yes if you bore it +.030" my Hypatec pistons will fit.
You will have to run unleaded 95 or 98 fuel.

Be aware that removal of the motor from an autobox is different to a manual. The 1st motion shaft nut (on bottom drop gear) must be undone before the drop gear housing can be removed and the motor lifted off.

I'll probably be in touch soon. He reckons I can get away with just decking the head. Might as well do some stuff to get it a bit faster.


I always only run 98 so that should not be an issue. :D

If tempted to fit a cam (I would), make it a short duration one. Otherwise, with an auto you'll be sitting there waiting for it to get on cam before anything happens.
I'd suggest GR's RE83, with stock rockers. Pulls like a train from low rpm and quits at about 6000. Lindsay Seibler used to refer to it as `a diesel cam'. :)

theres really no way for me to get a webber on there is there? unless some sort of mechanism was made to get the kickdown and what not to still work!

Back to back testing on my 1412 stroker showed 5ft/lb more torque with an HS6 SU than a 45 Weber or Dellorto. The SU was in front all the way to 6500rpm.
