Hi,

Wondering if anybody could give me an approximate mechanic or garage cost of converting auto to manual?

I live in Adelaide looking to buy and cannot find yet what I am looking for so this may broaden my opportunities

Highly reluctant to buy interstate as difficult to view the car and transport costs will be around $1000 anyway.

Would $1000 pay all, most or half a conversion?

Oh looking to buy mk3 and above and in this instance the car is a early Rover.

Thanks

IMHO you should just keep looking for a manual (if that's what you really want)...if you want to broaden your chances...LOOK EAST :D

There is a lot of work, and the easy part is finding a rebuilt manual gearbox.

A thousand dollars would not pay for the rebuilt box, let alone the modification or replacement of the engine, and alterations to the car to accept the manual change. Best to keep looking, there's plenty of great cars which come up and autos are pretty spesh in their own right as well.

If you are asking how to convert an auto block to work on a manual box (oilways are different), I wrote a blog for this,
see http://www.austinamericausa.com/

All rovers are imported, so be prepared to pay more money for one. There's plenty of australian built minis floating around that have seen less salted roads and are way cooler IMO.

Can I ask why you're looking for a rover?

Hi 69k1100 previously I have owned a Cooper S replica, 2 x mk2 Cooper S's and an early Cooper in my youth so I am just looking something different to these. I am not so much after a Rover but moreso the mk3 body shape with the bigger rear lights. But I am also partial to Rovers because they have as standard many of the features the early cars did not have including discs and tachos which I would want to fit anyway. Ruling nothing out I will just have to be patient!!
