Hi All, I've neglected my morris 850 for too long, she's been off the road for about 5 years. The 850 engine thats in her worked ok (from memory the gearbox was not great and felt under powered), with the help from other forum members here years ago i was able to upgrade the SU carby to a 1.5" (i think, so long ago). I purchased another engine off another member years ago with the hopes of upgrading the engine. I've sold on another project and have a small budget, i'd like to start with the engine. I'm chasing recommendations, looking to do most of the work myself. Any suggestions would be great, i've been reading over the forums for the past few weeks trying to familiarise myself with all this again. Here's a pic of the 850 installed at the moment: ![]() ![]() And heres a pic of the 998 i would like to install: ![]() ![]() thank you |

It does have a 1.5" HS4 in the top photo. The 998 is a later one from a Leyland from the engine number. It's likely to have pot joints and a rod change gearbox, so you'd need to work that out. The 850 would have rubber cross joints and a magic wand originally and might have a remote change now? I have a 998 in my car with a performance kit like this and it goes well and sounds good too. You'd be able to use the 1.5" carb from your 850 http://www.minispares.com/product/Class ... STN17.aspx |

someone else converted it to remote change before i go it. i kinda wish it stayed magic wand style, but it will make this conversion a bit easier i assume. |

Can't you change it back with Moke style gear lever? |

If it's a remote box, not rodchange you can fit the 1969-1973 Moke's `puddin' stirrer shift. IF you can find the bits...! Later Mokes with the rodchange box had the shifter through the floor closer to the driver (with short rodchange linkage). Won't go in the 850's original shifter hole. |
