Post subject:  A vs A+ drop gears
Can anyone please tell me if there are any differences between an A+ and A series drop gear.

I have an A+ 1275 on a 4syncro box and am getting a nasty rattle from the drop gears.

Im running minisport straight cuts with 5thou clearance on the idler gear thrust washer. Primary gear clearance im undure of but was within specs. There is not any excessive crank endfloat but when I put my foot on the clutch the rattle goes away...

Any ideas would be greatful

A+ gears are much finer teeth. They won't mix & match, you need to run one set or the other. A+ maybe quieter, I dunno.
Primary gear rattle is most common when running a big cam with a light flywheel. Increasing idle speed helps.

Ah cool cheers doc.. im running normal a drop gears. She also has a 286 cam and med lightened flywheel.

yes you`ll get a rattle because of the straight cut gears in the box,,, as soon as you put your foot on the clutch the gearbox gears basically stop turning,,, therefore the s/c gears stop chattering.

chattering away at idle with the foot off the clutch with a 6-speed dog box with s/c drop gear set is brain-draining :-)

& yes the A+ gear-sets were produced to help keep noise at a lower level,,, different helical cut on the teeth specifically to help keep them quieter,,, but as the good Doc suggested they cannot be "Miss-matched

even if you tried you won`t get them to miss-match :-)

also the A+ idler is a much larger diam shafts (either side) than the early A-series idler.

Ahh Ha !
Now I understand the ad. Couldn't get the gist of mixing a skirt with a top and all that went with it, what did that have to do with the jingle ! Now you have explained it in terms I understand I now get the catch line ! 8) :lol:
