Post subject: | Gearbox Case and Speedo questions |
Hi All, I have purchased a gearbox to eventually rebuild (and learn). I have two issues: 1. I am trying to sort out my speedo issue and have replaced the cable without luck, is the speedo drive in the box known to be a problem? I have disconnected the cable from the back of the speedo and it doesn't move while driving. 2. My spare case look to have a strange hole (this is going to be a stupid question) that looks like it could be case damage, I have attached a photo and the part I am referring to is the top right corner (bottom right when up the right way ![]() I tried to search for answer but have come up dry, happy to be pointed to an existing post. Cheers, Dean |

Does the cable turn if you physically do it? Cable might be broken thats all. That would be a locating dowel hole I believe. Possibly been drilled out to fit a different flywheel housing (I think Morris 1100 had bigger dowels). |

Does this mean I can't use it in my 76 clubman 1L? I have another case if I pull apart the one in the car but was hoping to rebuild this box whilst keeping the current running. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

if it's a 4 synchro rod change, then it'll be fine in your clubman djrobertshaw wrote: 1. I have disconnected the cable from the back of the speedo and it doesn't move while driving. if you've replaced the cable, then either the cable hasn't gone into the end of the drive at the gearbox end, or the drive at the gearbox end that the cable goes into is no-longer square and the cable is just floating inside it. djrobertshaw wrote: 2. I pulled out the speedo drive in my spare gearbox and the end is plastic so I might check that! The casting hole looks fairly rough and jagged is that normal? Thanks heaps for the info, I appreciate the help! Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I had a new speedo cable snap after only a couple of uses, when this happened I could turn the cable at the speedo end by hand easily and also pull the cable out towards the speedo. Changed the cable for another new one and no issues. Try turning the cable by hand and seeing if it will pull though, if it does its broken, if it doesn't then its likely the drive needs replacing. |

In my dads S, we had a problem with the speedo not working. Turned out to be the white nylon gear spinning on the shaft where the cable locates in the gearbox. Fairly easy to get out and replace |

Old cables had a nice square end that fitted the drive properly, now ones are less well made. Also, the few new cables I have bought in the last 10 years had no lube in them at all. If dry, smear with moly grease but leave the top 100mm dry so it doesn't get into the speedo. |
