Hi,

I am about to put a MED road steel flywheel assembly on the 1275 motor.

Is there a specific procedure, or tips I need to follow to do this right?

All help appreciated!!

Cheers

Matt

Cheers

I have all tools, and have done this in the car a few times now, and have about 6 different mini manuals telling me how to do it.

I want the tips, tricks etc.

1) If putting a whole assembly on, I have to loosen the bolts on the diaphram to loosen the clutch plate so it will centralise over the primary gear. How much do I loosen them? Do I have to loosen all the bolts, what sequence, what sequence do I re tighten?

2) What do I do to the crank nose before fitting? Clean with a 'wax and rease remover' or lightly grease? other?

3) Should I be 'lapping' the two surfaces together? If so, how?

4) What specific procedure do I follow when retightening the crankshaft retaining bolt? (tighten, bang with mallet, retighten, repeat 3 times??? etc etc.)

5) Locktite or locking washer on bolt? What loctite? Will it be able to be removed? Do you need to clean the thread out before you can bolt up again? How?

Things like that!!

Matt

KC has a method of lapping the flywheel in the Mini Expert. Something about tightening and hitting it with a hammer - repeat three times. I'd have to check to see if I've read it right though .

Make sure you fit the drive straps the right way round (don't ask me).

Make sure you fit the correct spacers under the drive straps.

Lap the flywheel onto the crank if you want. Use valve grinding paste and make sure you get rid of ALL of it from both surfaces before final asembly.

Better still put the clutch, diaphram and flywheel on a press and check out how level it really is. The spacers you have now may not be anywhere near what you need for the new flywheel/diaphram combination

There is usually 1 standard flat washer under the straps. Provided you stay with 6 straps- 2 straps on each, that will be correct. IF the assembled height is correct.
But what has happened over 30+ years is people have skimmed flywheels and backplates to clean them up. This buggers up the assembled height.
As said you need to do a trial build on the bench to see how the diaphragm is sitting when backplate/clutch plate/flywheel/straps/diaphragm are all bolted together. The diaphragm spring should be close to flat, as per Marcel Chichak's treatise above.
If not, the height of the 3 backplate lugs must be machined to suit.
