After booking my car in yesterday in order to quieten it a bit, I rock up today only to find another mini already on the hoist! How often do you go to a non mini place to find another car?! The owner of the business apologised, having expected a classic mini he put the other guy up straight away.

Whilst I waited the guy told me the story of the other car, this guy had just met a new girlfriend how had just bought a mini but was going overseas. Being a good boyfriend, he let her garage the car at his place and following her instructions, was supposed to drive it so the battery didn't go flat.

So he goes for his first drive and has a lot of trouble selecting gears, and then the "new" exhaust fell out. They put it up on the hoist and were speechless. Have a look why.. (apologies for camera phone)

How's that for a weld?


The new hole for the gear selector, offset by a few mm towards the passenger side. Still rubs hard up against the exhaust.


The rest of the car looked neat, and the engine bay looked tidy with lots of new bits.

As for me, my car sounds a lot better and seat of the pants tells me I picked up a couple of horses.

was carried out on the car, and I wonder if BLEEP .... That wasn't even discrete enough Chris <mod edit> had anything to do with this somewhat "interesting" craftmanship?

I went to the zorst shop (Parramatta Exhausts) the week before Xmas, got 2 bits of 2" pipe with bends, a 2" 6x9 oval straight thru (diagonal pipe) muffler and 4 clamps, for $141.
Not bad.
It fits too, my guesstimate of the bend angles was spot on!
More power from the 1360 now..... look out, Chongo.

I got the front pipe and the rear made with a 20* bend each, to suit this particular muffler.
With a non-diagonal pipe muffler ie S or RC40 style the angle is near 30*.
I put about a 5* bend in the front pipe next to the remote shift lever.
The 2" (OD) pipe fits on the outside of the Maniflow LCB.

I don't know who did the butchering on the car, and as the owner is o/s it would be unfair to jump to conclusions as to who did it. I don't know squat about welding, but I've never seen welding that looked like a pavlova before.

The place is called Lambros Hi-Tech exhausts, he does the Subaru Rally cars, and has been forever and a day just down the road from Taylor Square. They manufacture their own mufflers in Oz.

BTW, is there any benefit in adding a flex pipe to the exhaust?

Yes, I would add one to any mini exhaust that I fitted. It stops the worry of breaking the extractors when the motor moves and it also helps stop the mounts from braking.

Had a long chat with the guy as he has owned a heap of british cars (and been through 4 WRX STi) - he reckoned the best car he ever owned was a Triumph Stag that he rebuilt owned for 8 years. Worst was a Range Rover.
