Just thought I would share my way of fitting my new Valve springs.

When disassembling head or any engine part “Bag and Tag” all items so they go back in correct positions.

Head was checked over and caustic cleaned
All parts checked and cleaned
Old Valves where lapped into ports.

All the parts are ready to assemble
O-ring (New)
Split cotter
Cotter clip
Valve Spring (New)
Spring shroud
Retaining cap

Step 1
I manufactured this spring compressor out of some scrap steel and two 6mm bolts.

Step 2
Machine a nylon disk to suit your head compression space. This is to stop the valve from moving down. Lubricate valve stems with engine oil before fitting in valve guide.

Step 3
Set up the head on the drill press.
fit spring shroud and retaining cap in spring.
fit spring over valve stem.
mount spring compressor on the valve assembly

Step 4
Compress spring to reveal valve stem recess

Step 5
Clamp drill press in position or get a friend to hold down.
(You will need two hands to fit O-ring)
Slide O-ring over valve stem. This can be a little tricky the O-ring has a neat tolerance.

Step 6
Push O-ring down to bottom of the valve stem recess

Step 7
Fit first half of the Split cotter. And set down on O-ring

Step 8
Fit second half of the Slit cotter.

Step 9
Release the drill press gently, to allow split cotter to seat into retaining cap and also hold O-ring in place.

Step 10
Fit cotter clip

Step 11
Repeat for each valve.

it doesnt take much to carry out these kinds of jobs yourself. if you get good advice. Even for a novice like me.

Pretty flash tool. My version is a washer with a 5/16" bolt welded to it at 90deg and it goes in the chuck of the drill press. Been using it for 35 years on all sorts of cars. Don't have a photo.

A bit flasher than my method too.
Instead of the nylon disc, we used two 20 cents pieces gaffa taped together.

I always stuffed a wet rag in the chambers :)

My tool is similar, but not as well and beautifully crafted as niffty's :) http://img261.imageshack.us/img261/9936/26689319.jpg
