What if I told you that Hay is not just about having your Mini there and competing in a motorkhana?!!! Seriously! Although that adds to it all, if you can't get a Mini there just come anyway. It's hard to explain to people who have never been...

So go to Hay not to compete or even take the mini along?

I'll be going from Sydney next year, probably in the Mini. Accommodation already booked!
Very willing to convoy there and back, safety in numbers :)

My mini is in more bits than miniman269's at the moment and I WOULD have to have my mini there. I can't go there and leave mine behind but it IS on my list of things I have to do.

Yep, was good to catch up with a few people. Followed Poeee and two other families up there in a Falcon. Great weather probably helped but we enjoyed the whole thing muchly.
You should see the size of the local parmies :)

Probably a rite of passage for any true Oz Mini believer. I went there twice, both times in my Mk1 1293 Cooper S, from Adelaide in 1973 and from Melbourne in 1974. The Mini never missed a beat either time. Stayed at the caravan park. It was freezing cold. But the motorkhana and get togethers at the RSL club were good. No parade down the main street back then, just a one horse godforesaken typical Australian country town in middle of nowhere with very few amenities apart from the obligatory greasy road house, a dilapidated pub and of course the all-important RSL club. The locals looked bemused, some of the EH boys were downright aggressive. Sounds like a lot may have changed since then.

check, though this year went with a motel... I think that's going be the norm, it was nice to have a proper bed and be in the centre of town

definitely

pretty much, though there are two supermarkets!

the local tourism / chamber of commerce seem to be doing alright, it's quite a pretty town centre for the size of it

yep, two of them,

the pub (new crown) is pretty decent, and they seem to put up with us on the Friday night, then for tea on Sunday. I haven't been into the other pub more than once or twice, though the restaurant attached to it is good

on to the 3rd (maybe 4th?) generation of locals now, the bemused looks may be part of the local culture now

that's probably the B&S utes these days, they've started joining in the street parade and make a hell of a lot of noise

Does anyone actually drive a classic Mini to and from Hay now, or are they all trailered behind modern motors? This was a major part of the fun, especially convoys of bricks. Or are they mostly BINIS these days?

There are still a number that do, but alot trailer as they are competing at a decent sort of level, or they just don't trust the car. I would say there will be a number of people driving a mini next year. Being the 50th, alot will reminisce on times gone by.
