Hi guys i need some help identifying my 1978 mini clubman engine as on the paperwork i got with the car it says the engine number is 12YDTAH8J88 but that doesn't seem to match with any of the online identification sites, so I'm pretty sure that somewhere along the line the engine has been changed. The place where i think the engine plate should be seems to be missing it so is there any other place that an engine number would be?

12YDTAH is the Morris 1100S engine which is a 1275cc engine. Unless you have a 1275 LS your engine most probably would have started out as a 998cc

That J in the engine number on the paperwork is a typo.
With those numbers, the motor is a Morris 1100S, with a small journal crank and S rods.

On the flat surface on Block below the temperature sender unit there should be a number stamped between the two drilled holes. Clean with some sand paper as sometimes the stamped numbers fill up with dirt and become non visible. If there is no number there It might be that the block has had the deck shaved at some stage and number is Gone.

The thermostat housing is on an angle so its a small bore, also it has head studs so good chance its a 998 from that photo.
