So, I fill the mini up and drive it like I normally would. I can do about 300KM then I start to get this effect on the car as if it is starving for fuel, like it is running out of fuel. (Unsure because the fuel gauge doesn't work properly) So I go to the servo and fill it up and only put around 17-18L in and then it runs sweet again........... I do remember reading somewhere I think it was mini mania forum or something like that. A bloke had a problem with his fuel pump and it was to do with when the fuel level went down it then had an air leak so it wouldn't suck fuel through properly........ The weird thing is though when it starts to stutter I throw the clutch in and rev it and ride the clutch out a bit and it takes off and revs fine....... Being that I am on the Fraser Coast there isn't any real mini experts around these parts for me to have it diagnosed fully so I just wanted to see if anyone has had a similar problem and see if I need to replace the fuel pump or not.

a friend of mine had a similar problem, filled up the car ran fine, and the less fuel was inside the more stuttering. diagnosis showed no faults, even live data showed nothing.
as we removed the pump, it was a clogged pre-pump filter. covered in some whitish powder like substance. some say it may be zinc oxide from inside the fuel tank.
after about an hour ultrasonic cleaning it was resonable clean and the car runs great again.
maybe worth a check

pre cleaning

Ok so this afternoon I filled the mini after it was doing the above described and put 28L in it. Now I know that the tank is a 34L tank as per the workshop manual that means there is 6L unaccounted for. It could be the pump pre filter in this case then. Does this sound about right?

Check for blocked vent as you may be getting a vacuum build up in the tank which would coincidentally disappear when you take the cap off to fill up.

I had another car, not mini, that some 'mechanic' had fitted new pump. He'd taken the original huge old style pump out and fitted a new small universal pump, about 50mm shorter, but rather than fit longer hose, he was quite happy to leave it 50mm off bottom of tank. Not saying thats your problem but worth a thought.
If you're wanting to test the blocked vent sinerio, try taking cap off when it plays up, let air in and try driving on.
If you need a pump, a commodore one fits.

filling in 28 liters sounds like it was empty. no matter what the manual says, i don't know anyone who gets out more than 28-29 liters as the pump sits quite high inside the fuel tank

34L=7.5 imperial gallons...maybe long range tank?

And also do check the fuel vent block like vandal says. A mate had that same thing before on his motorbike.

i've never seen a Rover Mini with anything else but the 34l tank, being a 94 model i assume it's injection with in-tank pump. and that pump can not reach all fuel as it sits at a relative high spot inside the tank

If it's like the one I got for my micra conversion which was a SPI tank the sock sat pretty much on the bottom of the tank (would be pretty silly otherwise). And mine is a 30 something tank.
