Hi guys,
Does anyone here do resprays? The acrylic on mine is shockingly fragile, and I'd love to have something shinier and sturdier, 2 pack preferably.
Thinking if I could do the prep (won't need filling, just rubbing back) and masking up, and someone spray it, I'd get an infinitely better job that is on there now.
Not perfect probably, given my budget, but it's far from that now, and is so scratch prone that in a year it'll be more scratch than paint.

Any thoughts would be really great. Thanks heaps!

You shouldn't really put 2 Pak over acrylic. I found out the hard way with Barney. Parked in the sun at work for 6 months, the different expansion rates frazzled the 2 Pak on the side of car.
I would redo it in acrylic, or strip it back to bare metal.

Yes the acrylic was original paint I think.. The guy who built the car said it was a bare metal respray.
It wasn't, I found red paint under the BRG 2 pak.
I have done a TAFE spray painting course, they cautioned against it, but it is common on el cheapo resprays.

Thanks for the tip.
I've heard of some kind of isolator coat being used between, not sure how that works.
Just found a local guy who is happy to look over the car and make some recommendations so I'll share his thoughts and see how I go, though always keen on any other members who might have ideas / be keen to have a crack at it.

I was going to try my local tafe to see if they had some students who wanted to do it but looks like they've shut the course down

You spray 2 pack hifill or primer in between, but the problem is not interaction between the paints, it is differential expansion between the 2 paint types when the panel gets hot.Acrylic expands more and the 2 pak resists it.
Having said this, my red car was done the same way but it is garaged all the time. Was a $3K cheap job, and some panels now need redoing.

Gee that's a shame - so even a 2pac over acrylic job that isn't too exposed ends up with issues.
When you say some panels need to be redone, what exactly has happened? Cracking and anything g major or just some minor imperfections that constantly strike the eye as an owner but to most are ok?

Gee that would be pretty upsetting. Vinyl look straight off the gun or did it come up after a year or so?

Sounds like an acrylic redo or rub back to bare is the best bet.
Not sure I can afford it, any recommendations for sealing and protecting the existing acrylic a bit better?

Your correct, you an use an isolator to allow bonding of the two types of paints. It is a highly flexible paint that actually etches and adheres to the underlying paint. They can successfully be used to paint over acrylic and incompatible paints. I would be more concerned about the quality of paint being used in the elcheapo paint job.
If you are doing all the prep work yourself, laying the paint is the easy part. Why not ask for some advice on how to prep it properly, and get it ready for paint.
If it is ready to shoot, you won't pay much for a decent job. They won't accept responsibility for the work because the finish is all in the prep, but you have a better chance of a good finish for your budget.

Alternatively ask someone on here to show you how to paint yourself. Your car sounds like the perfect thing to cut your teeth on and pop your spray gun cherry. I'm not a painter but asked a lot of questions, took my time and over the years the finish is better and better. My cars have gone on to win multiple concourse events including RACQ restored car of the year, and even received an award for best standard paint on my sisters mini, which was painted outside on the driveway under a tarp. Its a skill that will save you thousands and is very rewarding.

Wow thanks for the reply and what a great looking paint job.
Appreciate the offer of advice too.
A local painter has actually offered to take a look at the car and see what my best options are, which is great. Unfortunately I don't even have a garage so doing it myself is a bit nerve wracking. I think the state of the body is good though, so hopefully just needs a good clean and rub back, no filling or anything. Doing it myself would probably mean investing in more gear than I have use or space for

Hoping to catch him next week and will keep the post updated with progress
