Hi I have a single circuit coopers disk brake with a vh44 servo all new or rebuilt, cleaves pins etc.

I went for a warrant oz version of a road worthy and the inspector noted that there is very little pedal free play

If you apply the brakes really hard the brakes are slow to release.

I have fitted one of those fancy alumnium plates that fit under the master cylinders and the proper master cylinder gasket which is about 3mm.

Question: This in theroy pushes up the master cylinder up higher removing the freeplay. could this be holding the brakes on I have about 10mm of travel before the brakes come one

I second 9YaTaH. Old hoses lose their inside diameter and behave like one way valves completely affecting the way the brakes behave....

All hoses and pipes are new. Did check non where twisted.
Master cylinder is new it's a tin can cooper S one
Seals in calipers all new
Rear wheel cylinders new
Servo professional rebuilt
The only thing not new is the rear proportional valve.
It was stripped and cleaned. Mint inside

The free play at the pedal is only 10mm

The only things that are non standard are the mounting plate and gasket

Head scratching begins

1. If you fit a spacer under the master cylinder and raise it away from the brake pedal, won't that INCREASE the free travel of the pedal?
2. If you are having problems with slow release of the brakes then there might be an issue with the seals in the callipers not pulling the pistons back (needs time on the road);
or a problem with the valve at the end of the master cylinder - not letting fluid back into the cylinder quickly.

I think the inspector found something whilst looking for something...

10mm doesn't sound like a lot of free play to me...so long as the disks are really working well...readjust the rears carefully, making sure the shoes are centred by tapping the pedal a few times...

The staying on is a worry though...sticking caliper piston(s)

The inspector is a personal friend and a mini guy. It has way less than any other mini we own which is 20 plus between us.

Could be seals I used brake grease when I assembled them
The pistons went together with out too much resistance

I will take the spacer out and see if that makes a difference

I took out the fiber washer and the pedal free play increased and the brakes dont appear to bind at present.

The master cylinder base plate is a dsn classic one which is thicker than standard.
