I am getting the 850 body ready for a coat of paint, and want to keep it original to the era - 1962.

Did the Aussie 850's (and Cooper's) have a layer of sound deadener or body Schultz inside the guards and under the floor pan, that was then covered in body colour?

Yes. Most of the underfloor area and most of the upper guards were coated in a thick bitumous layer and then painted body colour.
