I think I'm going to do the same for my next rebuild....

It was GR's recommendation when I had to do a rebuild due to ring failure at 2600km - one hell of a shock, but with GR's pistons and Nippon rings all seems to be ok, and the cam is that much better too.

I think I'll ask him what it'd be like with a long stroke crank too....

Thanks for the info guys.
I am going to try an SY. Similar to the RB at the top end but a little leaner in the mid range.
Does everyone use a yellow spring?

I'd have to check but if my memory serves me well, I think mine is blue. if it is different I will notify you.

David, I built it with a red spring. Blue is far too soft for an HS6.

It may have been RED but there is no witness of ANY colour and I have 2 spare springs, neither of which have ANY colour. You would have to measure the compression strength and have the relevant chart to know what spring is what. I still have the original build spring and yes I did remember seeing a red spring but there is no colour whatsover now.

David, the colour always disappears. Put a blue, red and yellow spring together, the difference between them is obvious.
It wasn't a new spring by the way.
Trust me, a blue spring is useless in an HS6.

What is the process you guys use to check your AFR whilst driving? Do you have a set step by step - like 3rd gear accelerating up a slight hill check AFR at various RPM? Or do you just drive around and try and keep an eye on things as you go?

Check this out: http://ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=91804

I ran through this with Tadhg a while back.

Tadhg was running yellow springs and we eventually found he needed blues. Your best bet is to get an endoscope and position it to look at the carbs to tell you how far they are opening at WOT / high RPM.

I definitely recommend a portable wideband. Mine has gotten heaps of use in various cars and bikes. My mini does 12.2-12.5 under power and 13.8 at cruise. As simon says, sometimes there is a rich / lean spot just on major changes of throttle but I feel my car is very smooth and the fuel delivery is about as close as I think I can get without going EFI. I started off with GY needles and have sanded mine down to AN to get a bit more fuel at cruise.

I drive around home at part throttle and varying rpm then hammer it up the local hill in 2nd gear, up to 6000rpm or so. [Its an 80KMH area but shhhhhhh].
(Edit) I take a passenger to watch the meter.

similar to Kev I have a hill that I always use, and driving along the freeway with left foot on the brake to get full load - sometimes smells a bit...

Thanks drmini and simon k. Do you try and hold a certain RPM for a period of time? Like 2000, 3000, 4000, 5000, 6000 for 10 or so seconds or more?

No, just do an acceleration run at full throttle, watching the meter.

I do that... not very scientifically, but when I was trying to verify which spot on the needle was the wrong shape I kept doing the same test to make sure I'd cleaned it up. I drove to Melbourne tonight (300km) and watched the AFR almost the whole way
