Ian's right, no matter which way you go, it doesn't mean you can just set and forget the clutch adjustments. As the clutch wears the bearing moves 'out', this in turn pushes lever towards the little stop, Requiring checking.
If you're a casual driver, not hard on clutch, the linkage and pivots usually wear as well, negating the need to adjust if not using spring. With the spring on, all this wear has to be taken up before anything actually happens at clutch.
Regarding thrust bearing failures, it can be from a few different causes. Old age, over use (i.e riding pedal), incorrect adjustment of stops, seized pivots or plunger, even old collapsed hydraulic hoses or rusted cylinders. :-)

As long as you have a good gap at the arm stop it is set and forget. Mine is set around 2mm, is not critical as long as there IS a gap.

Take the spring, go outside and throw it on the neighbours roof.
Works perfectly fine without the spring.

I use a piece of heavy gauge wire that is bent to a hook then got at it from the wiper motor end. Easy on and easy off simple but i had a weber and extractors.
