The YG2S is usually one separate stamp and then the 4 is stamped then a space before the car number.

In a perfect world your stamping would look something like this.

The early stampings looked like this

Then this style

Looks like the same stamping to me. The YG2S is all one stamp and the others are hand stamped one at a time. The size of the punches at this stage of production are all the same height.

Does it have an early wiper panel to match the early wiper motor?

For Winabbey
Thanks for your info. The owner has sought a mini expert and he is expecting a report in the next week. Would still like confirmation of possible identity from all on this forum that can help.
We have found the number 2/06 with 1588 stamped into the firewall behind the Clutch & Brake Master cylinders. See photo.
I will also post photos of the Hydro suspension channels ( Hydro removed but pipes in place) and wiper spindles & body work.
Have found the number AEG 312 forged in the engine block.

Kind regards

The 2/06 1588 stamp looks the goods - and it lines up really well with it being car YG2S4 2089. Just a shame that someone restamped it incorrectly into YGS4S4 2089 at some stage. Hopefully it is what they say and the compliance plate was lost then they restamped the incorrect prefix. On the other hand the compliance plate could now be fitted to another car and it now wears the YG2S4 2089 stamping.

I have looked at both the MK 1 & MK II registers and cannot find the numbers 1588 or 2089. does this mean its not an Australian assembled car. Maybe I am not reading the lists correctly -can you assist please

Maybe it has not been put in the register because there are issues with its authenticity. I am sure there is a background register which holds the info on suspect cars so it may have been added to that. It is most likely that this car started as a 1970 Mk2 S with the chassis number YG2S4 2089 but without the Compliance plate and correct radiator shroud stampings i am not sure it will be added to the register.

Did a report by a Mini expert eventuate?

As gtogreen1969 stated, there needs to be strong evidence of a car's credentials before it is added to the register. Details from sales or other paperwork or inspection by a knowledgeable person are examples.
