willy,
Great info. Site bookmarked .
I did a bit of a search for this sort of info but couldn't find anything specific.
I think my logic and Google logic are at odds with each other.
Thanks.

The needle position can be adjusted. There is/are a slot/s in the back of the temp gauge to adjust the needle position.
(I can't remember if there are one or two adjustment slots in the back)
The 6 dots on the gauge face, 2 under each of the C,N and H correspond to specific water temps but I don't know what they are.
My S has the needle slightly below the N when the thermostat - 180 deg F, starts to open.
The needle centreline is above the LH edge of the N. It has been this way since new.
Are you sure you have the correct sender?
There are a multitude of different senders out there, some genuine Smiths and some aftermarket.

Hope this helps

RonR

I bought the sender that John at MKO recommends. My old sender was doing the same thing. This is the one I bought. https://minikingdomonline.com.au/produc ... -cooper-s/

Both old and new are the same sender marked B710.

As they sit now the one on the engine is 660 ohms @18 deg. The old one is 850 ohms @ 17 deg. To do a proper comparison i will have to take out the new one then compare the 2 using hot / boiling water.

I think i will try the adjustments on the gauge first.Image

That's interesting. My temp sender has the red centre too, but a few people have told me it's the wrong sender, should be black, but it works fine. Maybe the color means nothing and varies with brand. I think when I tested mine with hot water the beginning of the red was exactly 100deg. Somewhere on here there's a bulletin/post saying what temps should be on gauge.

I bought mine years ago and it sat in a box until I just recently fitted it. I am pretty sure I ordered the one recommended for the Cooper S - GTR101 but I cant find my invoice. But the MGB bloke reckons the GTR104 is the red one marked B710. Maybe I have the wrong one. The websites don't show it as red or any B710 markings. I reckon I have stuffed up somewhere in the ordering. I'll blame the Oxycontin.

After cleaning connections on my gauge it was indicating just below the H mark at 82C on the top tank. About 180F.
I am running the sender that John Smidt recommends.
I believe the needle should point mid scale at this temperature so today I fitted a 200 ohm miniature trimpot at the sender, it's set at around 10 ohms. So far, so good.
(Edit) I am using Wombat's electronic 10V stabiliser.

I did the same but later went and got a resistor for something like 3 dollars for 2 to make the change more robust, unable to change, and better able to cope with heat. I was supposed to return the guage sender and voltage stabiliser but it says what it's supposed to now so I guess I can't see the point.

Saved the trimpot so I can deal with other gauges...

Good idea I will do the same, after driving it for a week.;)
[edit]
The original 47 year old C-H temp gauge ain't broke, so no way I'll spend $100+ buying a new one which may not read any better. I just need to know that if it says `H", it bloody well is!
