So would the axles still turn coming out of the gearbox if in gear?

I will have a better peak tomorrow night. Thanks for all you help. I hope I can still make Saturday morning at RE.

If I do, I probably won't have the mini.

Simon

I would put the front of car on axle stands, put in 1st gear, motor off- then see what does/doesn't turn.

If you get someone to hold one wheel and you try to turn the other, it shouldn't turn. If you just turn one wheel the other should spin in opposite direction if the diff gears are intact.

OK I had another quick look tonight, just don't have much time of an evening, and it seems the diff is working as the Doc said it should. That is some good news. Does this also mean that the clutch is working fine as it found first gear ok?

If that is the case I just have a CV Joint and drive shaft to change out.....

I will be at GRs if that is all there is to do..

Is there anything else I should look at after a failure like this... Wheel bearings or anything?

For those that ever encounter similar symptoms, it turned out to be that the drive shaft had some how come out of the CV joint.

Gave the drive shaft and CV a good clean, made sure that there were no broken bits or problems, and whacked it back together.

So far haven't had a problem. Touch wood

Maybe it wasn't right into the CV...
If it happens again, replace the wire circlip in the end of the driveshaft...

It was some poor workmanship on my part.
