Crane have been making a killing with the V8 boys for many years with their giant coil packs. I saw a comparo using the coils on various standard, slightly and heavily modified V8's(The precise market these things are aimed at). The result was that they were pretty close to a waste of money.

They can have one small advantage in that they can retard the spark slightly using a small adjuster on the coil pack. Saves spinning the dizzy I suppose....
I think some can also extend the duration artificially as well - maybe for a cleaner burn but little else.

Thanks for the info. Well im moving my coil to the cluth housing, cos I reckon it looks better and wont get as hot, also if any water finds its way to the coil it won't sit on top of it for ages  it's happened to me before. It should make it easier to work on other stuff too, like the altenator, oil filter, dizzy heaven forbid anything should go wrong with these  and when my coil dies, which wont be anytime soon, i hope! I might go for a sports coil, mainly cos they look cool and I can say to my friends, 'yeah, thats a sports coil!'

It would probably stay cooler out the front (its freezing there with the car on 40mph).

What about facing it to the rear - away from incoming water?

They don't normally get hot. Unless you sit there with ign on, motor stopped and points closed.... :?
If you bolt it to the inner guard, which is accepted normal car practice, it'll use the guard as a heatsink. Better than on a motor at 80C or so. The clutch housing/gearbox casing gets that hot too....
