I need help....again!

I should know this but what is the size is this nut?

I have finally got around to replacing the sports steering wheel with a re-furbished original wheel and brand new horn push.

The car is a MK.1 Cooper S 970.

Appreciate any advice.

I have used a 3/4inch Whitworth socket (would be cheap, used, on ebay?) but sockets are a lot cheaper these days.

Thanks Bill.

I went to Sydney Tools and got a 1 5/16ths for $14.

Surely that was a necessary reason to leave home. I did wear a mask. Fogged my glasses something shocking.

Well done, was going to suggest to visit a tool store, picked up a deep impact 1 and 5/16" socket for < $15 a few months ago.

Clean the thread carefully and make sure the nut spins all the way to the bottom of the thread with no effort (without the wheel on).
Only then tighten the nut down on the wheel, with the correct star washer of course.
No need to over tighten - no doubt there is a torque recommendation somewhere.
The thread is an unusual pitch and dies are practically impossible to come by.
Also I have discovered two different pitched nuts in my spares box - some are from other BMC vehicles I am told.

What size is the star washer? Something I can buy from Bunnings, or does it need to be genuine from a Mini site?

According to Mini Spares this is the internal star washer for the wheel retaining nut:
I've never renewed the washer - and I'm still here to tell the tale...… so far.

That's very interesting. The steering column isn't something you mess with on a regular basis. Will bear it in mind.

Talking about steering wheels, I wonder why so many after market steering wheel manufacturers don't make original steering wheels. Maybe it's too hard.

the majority of car accidents are caused by a loose nut behind the wheel...

Leave the nut on its last few threads when coaxing the steering wheel off...saves a visit to the Dentist
