Shard: "...but still the single click when I turn over."

I thought it was multiple clicks...

If its a single click, your starter motor has jammed/stopped in an "awkward position" and can be fixed by tapping the radiator end of it. It happened to me once, had to get the RAC to come help me. Can't be more technical than that, sorry!

EDIT: Come to think of it, if it was a solenoid problem, you wouldn't be hearing any clicks at all. Just silence. It's definately the starter motor. Try rocking it back and forth first.

Solenoids use a moving copper washer that makes contact with 2 copper contacts on the studs, when they wear by arcing it can still click but not switch current to the starter.
But sometimes, the problem is low voltage to solenoid from the ign switch. See my other post to FatMaser's thread.

fixed woohoo!

Got up and the first thing I did was rock the car, it moved pretty freely and I wasn't hearing any clicks so I got back under the bonnet and felt if the square knob on the end of the starter was moving freely (I guessed if it wasn't, then the wheel inside where it goes wasn't jammed). It moved freely so I decided to hit the solenoid.

Did the screwdriver test and still nothing. As a precaution I took off the solenoid assembly from the moke and put it in just in case. Still a click. By this stage I was ready to pack it in and not look at the car for a month... buuuuut I gave in after ten minutes or so.

I thought I'd try again ground up by swapping the moke battery in, just incase something was drawing power from it and had flattened the new one (although I didn't think so seeing as I had the moke battery in there a few days when I got it and it was still fine). Lo and behold when I go to pull the earth off, it comes free from the other end and reveals this

Went to the moke and pulled off the neg cable and attached it and bam, we have ignition!

Repco or supercheap sell flat (no idea why this one is raised, moke one is flat and they both go under bolts) neg cables yeah?

Shard

ps. thx for all your help. next job is an oil leak. it's coming from where the gear rod goes into the engine underneath the car. Realised my moke jack is too high for the clubbie so I'm gunna have to go and buy some ramps (40$?) on wed and go from there. Expect another post soon when I can't work out how to fix that either heh.
