in the moke, in mid road, if i took my foot off the throttle
(when changing down, or when turning a corner)
it would turn off, just like you'd turn the key off whilst in motion
then when i was ready, i'd put it in gear and let the clutch out again
and the momentum would bring it to life again
and i'd continue on my way

very comical if you think about it

anyway the moral of the story is that the tappet covers had a bad seal
and new gaskets solved the problem
air leak liked to stall the engine in midst motion

I was in outside lane of motorway once, cars all around and the mini just 'switched off'. did a few more times as well, but not as scary as trying to get across 3 lanes of 100kph+ cars! Turns out the solenoid was rooted. Replaced it and never had the trouble again. Get your solenoid checked.

ok heres my understanding of the solenoid:

its usually open (turned off)
when battery goes to it, it closes (turns on)
this surge of current goes to the starter motor (still turned on)
the engine starts
the solenoid opens (turns off)

and thats the end of the story.

how does this affect the running of the car whilst in motion? :?
