I don't think it matters that it only had single leading shoe brakes.... the tree provided the stopping power in this instance!

Strange, these days because of the age of the car it wouldn't be classed as a write-off, you could technically rebuild it :?

I gotta say that picture sure had an impact (no pun intended) - I found myself subconciously tightening my seatbelt when I got in the car today - which means I have to click the touchkey before I do my seatbelt up or I can't reach!

In 1965, no, seatbelts were not compulsory fitting. I doubt one would have helped anyway- the tree went straight thru the rad, missed the crank, and finished over a foot into the roofline. My front seat finished up nearly on the back seat.

Yep, I realise I'm a real lucky guy, to still be alive on this planet.

I posted this pic to remind you people that what you think is `your road' round the next bend, may well not be. Drive defensively- and don't take things for granted. Some of those other drivers ARE idiots, you need to make allowances.

That's a great point Doc. I saw a lady die by a young idiot losing it round a bend and drifting into the wrong side of the road. He was in an XD, she was in some little piece of tin. She was on her way to her mother's place where her husband was waiting. They were about to go on a holiday somewhere, I forget where. She never made it. She died the next day. The last image I have is her head slumped on the steering wheel.
Take care guys. People assume minis are slow and pull out in front of us or simply don't see us.
All points to the doc.

i know a few other people here ride bikes and they'd know that the stuff they try and teach us in ridersafe (Q-ride and whatever) should be taught to ALL people when they get their liscence regardless of what they intend to drive

i know how scary it is....i've come within about a inch of being knocked off my bike at 60kmh.... "i didnt see you" ..........."well guess what mate, thats not good enough!"

Whats worse is when you are doing 70km/h on a bike and someone doesnt see you, pulls out of a side street and blocks your path. Nothing stops a bike faster I can tell you..!!

25 meter airborne, smashed left arm, smashed face, snapped off right hand, shattered right arm, 12 weeks in hospital, 10 months learning how to write and type again and a lifetime of arthiritis later, you appreciate the two doors, the bonnet, the roof, the seatbelts and whatever "safety" equipment a Mini provides...

Belonged to a mate of mine in QLD. Was his first car. I think he was pissed when he did that one.

Kev, I like your plates on your wreck (CNC). Did they have CNC machines back then? I doubt it 8)

Yes, this thread has prompted me to think hard about putting in a new bucket seat or two, locking seat subframe and a 6 point harness as a minimum

My motto is now Safety First! next few items have to be a loud air horn (let em know you're there!), H4 headlight conversion kit for nigt driving, left rear vison mirror (slighty dangerous to overtake to left lane when there is a Landcruiser up your ass), Disc brakes, and how hard is it to install side impact bars in the doors?

All this sounds very familiar....... ....... but i did it 'Fun first, safety always"

I reckon a good way of notifying traffic that you are there (like trucks and 4WDs) is a good loud air horn or two, one that can be heard over traffic and over loud stereos. Use it often, use it wisely!

Good work Doc, now I am constantly thinking safety first! Good onya mate!

Yeah I agree entirely. I've never (really) riden a motorbike, but my father has a nice BMW K1 (with 16 valve head that can be modded onto A series...) and he taught me to drive - taught me all the tricks he's learnt from riding a motorcycle. They're *very* useful skills for Mini drivers.

I remember my P-Off instructor guy saying that the reason people change lanes into me is because "they weren't expecting a toy car". My horn is a POS, and although it creates great amusement for my passengers, it is useless on the road. Thus, 6000rpm in third with a loud exhaust demonstrates my annoyance
