I'm wondering about swapping out a 850 magic wand motor for a remote gearchange 1000. Can I unbolt the magic wand from the existing motor to avoid having to cut into the shell for the remote gearchange?

I've probably got the answer somewhere in my Mini Technical Library, but the librarian's on holiday, and taken the keys for the entire west wing of my estate and my valet doesn't know where the spare keys are. So I shot him.

Thanks in advance for your timely and useful advice

You'll have to hack a hole in the floor infront of the hand brake where the shifter pops out.

You mean get one the fellows from my stables to do that? No, that's why I want to retain the magic wand. I won't swap the motor if I need to hack into the floor.

Ah yep, that makes sense.

I'm almost 100% sure that a 998 engine will bolt onto a magic wand box. My 1970 Mini K van has an 1100 with a magic wand box. Whether the box is the same as an 850 box, I don't know.

So magic wand onto a 998 (previously remote change) right :?:

I am reasonably sure it's possible cause a guy in Armidale (before I moved to Canberra) told me his 850 now had a 998 (as well as twin shoe brakes) :D which he was rapt in, which made me think maybe I can stay with my drums as well :D

There is two types of Magic Wand shifter.

The 850 type is integral with the rear half of diff housing. Swapping the rear of the diff housing is not a good idea, as teh castings are line-bored at the factory. It usually leaks oil if you mismatch them.

On some Mokes and Mini vans there is a different type of magic wand which bolts onto a remote box. The shaft into the gearbox is changed for one with a cup in it for the gearstick, instead of the usualt fork type. A different gearstick fits into a socket in a plate. The plate bolts on to the diff housing in place of the remote. The gearstick then pokes through the factory hole in an 850.

I have one of these shifters somewhere, saving it for use in my Traveller.

I'd like to put a Magic Wand stick in my 850 with 1100 motor The Doctor told me how to do it in the thread somewhere on this forum and I'm sure I kept a hard copy somewhere. Kev will tell you all about it

wow how funny is this I just two hours ago removed a 12G228 (all syncro remote box)from a 72 Moke with the magic wand.
I probably will convert this box to a normal remote shifter so if anyone need the conversion parts (including the grease nipple extention) for the magic wand make me an offer.

Bwahaha. I was just thinking that to the uninitiated all this would sound like a chapter from the new Harry Potter book!
