Well I've got another crank, and dropped it into Spiro.
He said it all looks good, but will properly crack test it before grinding it.
Just got back from Mini Classic - Greig had a set of Cooper S "521" Rods for me so I've got them now too.

Hopefully all systems go now - as long as this bastard doesn't fail the crack test!!!
See what happens

Something has occured to me while reading all this. How far are you going, to clean all the debris out of the motor and transmission? by rights the whole lot should be stripped down to nothing and rebuilt, that's what I would do anyway. Might seem like a pain but debris through the oil galleries, pump etc will shorten the life of any motor.

Not to mention all that debris in the oil cooler too (if you run one). Should be replaced.

Forgot about that bit, I just threw one away for the same reason. This is one of the big drawbacks with a combined engine/transmission, the whole lot has to be stripped right down to the cases, the gears off the shafts, the whole lot needs to be done, a real pain in the neck.

Well I don't run an oil cooler so there's no prob there.
The gearbox looks fine, and bugger all debris came out in the oil so I think with a good clean out she should be fine??

I have got one criteria for cleanliness when building a motor and the transmission, pretend it is a space shuttle, that's how clean it has to be. Get it that clean and you will have no problems. Others may disagree.

Chris i agree totally. The amount of degreaser and thinners i used on my rebuild is ludicris. but i am hoping it will all be worth it in the end.

Cheers

Aaron

ah so thats why they have a 50/50 chance of blowing up when reentering the atmosphere. they have ex mini mechanics working on the space shuttle.

to clean a gear box properly you need to strip it down to a casing with every gear and bearing stripped, the nice thing about a crank break is the material is not going to leave little peices floating around most of the time its a clean break and big peices fall into the bottom of the box. match the 2 ends of your cometition 2 piece crank up and havce a look to see how well they match, then start to look for the affending peices to start with if your not going to strip the entire box down.
I would still clean it out, but hey i broke a diff pin and plantry gear on a run, we pulled the motor out with a tractor and replaced it with a 2nd hand one and it has run fine for years now.
some time you lucky sometimes your not, its up to you if you feel lucky.

Bob, when you fit S/H S rods, don't forget to change the rod bolts- you dunno where they've been...
ARP are good but cost $175 approx, but you can use ARP 155-6002 `B/B Ford', or `HPX' B/B Ford, p/no 710-047.
Both are cheaper and you get 16 bolts not 8.... :P
PM me if you want fitting details.

You might want to stop if you find yourself sticking ceramic tiles to the floorpan though

Do I seem like a lucky person to you???

I will have a good look at the gearbox, and talk to my mechanic and GR and see what they suggest. If it needs stripping, it WILL be stripped. I'm not going to this much trouble to have something ELSE F&*k up!!!

Spiro the crank grinder rang me last night while I was at dinner - he knew I was worried about the crank, so stayed back last night and crack tested it for me. Came up good so I'm a bit happier now :) What a good bloke.

Already on the list doc - thanks.

One of the reasons I think I got the rods so cheap apart from the fact that Greig is a good bloke is that some of the rod bolts are missing!!

I'm sure I'll run into you at GR's over the next few days eh Kev?
