I'm sure my old BMC neighbour (He took my family out to Zetland to see the Morry 1100's being made ) said it stood for Morris Oxford Wolseley Group ,

Why would 3 established car manufacturers (Morris, MG, Wolseley) joining forces together, refer to themselves as Garages? I mean the fact that MG (Morris Garages) had the "Garages" in its name, could be used as evidence that the bigger brother, Morris did not use that suffix. And even MG dropped the "Garages" suffix in favour of plain "MG" as soon as they started manufacturing their own cars, rather than just reselling and tuning Morris' ones. So the garages story seems convenient because of the already established precident of the G in "Morris Garages" but highly improbable.

On the other hand "Morris, Wolseley, Morris Garages" (MOWOG) creted out of the merger of the 3 previously independent firms, in the order of importance, seems much more reasonable, especialy so since the term was reportedly first used around about the time of the merger.

I asked Lord Nuffield on his deathbed and he told me it stood for (his words)

"GGGGGggggg...." then he died.

I thought it stood for Morris & Wolseley Garages (or possibly group), I ain't convinced about the MG bit because MG was already a moniker for Morris Garages, which would lead to Morris and Wolseley and Morris Garages or MOWOMOG...
