Cool, I think I found one new for $70 USD, no core. I PM'd him as well.

Thanks for the reply!

The pics shown here are of a Honda Civic starter.

TK actually used a Toyota starter (Honda parts are expensive in Oz). Many of the NipponDenso starters will fit using this method. TK's tip was to pick the ones with the longest possible "nose" so you can get the best engagement, especially if you mini has a 3/8" flywheel.

Fair shake :o , TK posted the article yes but I did the conversion on the Toyota starter, not TK, please check the other thread. Credit where credit due thanks. No offense meant Ty. :D

This forum is becoming a nightmare to find threads. The thread JustMinis is talking about is under MiniChat not the starter thread in MiniMods.

I got this info and pictures on using the Honda starter from one of our good Canadian friends (obviously when you see how much he paid at the wreckers). It was posted on the Mini Mania forum. I don't know who it was otherwise they would have got the credit.

"yes, that was where I got the idea from" JustMinis did the Toyota starter conversion.

Credit where credit is due I just can't remember the bloke who posted it on MM.

They say it will fit a Cooper S. Doubt it, no room there for an oil cooler!!!! Just like the Gemini starter.

The best starter I have found for a Big Mini Engine is this one which I have modified mtself. It is the same starter motor that is fitted to 6 cyl Ford falcons and V6 commodores. They are the planetary gear type, they are very powerful and compact. They do not interfere with Oil coolers and they are actually lighter than the original Lucas M35 starter that Minis came out with. One of the other advantages of this starter is that if the ring gear is worn it will not worry it as like the gemini and Honda ones it engages from the front side of the ring gear. If any one is interested in these I can supply them for $250. You might think it is expensive but if you consider that there is more than two hours of labour involved in doing the modification, the usual parts used for reconditioning each unit and that the actual starter I used to modify can normally sell for $185.00 plus GST in it's normal form so an extra $75 .oo on top of the starter cost is quite reasonable when you get a starter that works very well and lighter and you can get parts for it at any Auto Electrician. If anyone wants a Pic of One I can email it as I can't post one on here.

For the starter TK ended up with, is it similar to the one in the pics of the Honda one? & is this the same as the 1380 yellow devil? They all look like RA series Denso ones to me

Image

So who nows how these compare to Gemini in terms of size/weight and starting?

Cheers

Daniel
