OK so i bought the 1275 LS motor from Josh that originally came out of Dean's car (thanks Josh). I have started to disassemble and here are a few pics. i still need to buy a flywheel bolt and get a puller (maybe make a DRmini special) to get to the bottom of the lack of drive that Dean experienced. It might have been something as simple as oil on the clutch cos there was heaps on the cover. the rockers are horribly worn, don't like the look of them and the tops of the valves are probably cactus too, can't tell what if any head work has been done, but it only has single valve springs. it seems to have had at least one rebore, but i can't find the oversize stamped on the pistons, the bores still had good honing marks in them. the water pump is almost new, a little crud, but not at all corroded. the biggest surprise was the double row timing gear, was not expecting it. it has not even been run in yet

Dean any ideas what was done to this before you had it? and did you do anything to it?
In that last pic you can see the extra lock washer that had obviously been left inside the diaphragm cover. there were marks all over the inside of it where it had been bouncing around...

I have also been working on an 1100s motor (out of the wife's 1100s) the last two days. I am also suprised at a couple of things. I pulled the motor because it had locked in first gear. Could not see the problem the the gearbox is stamped "mini king" on the inside and looks brand new. No burnt oil stains or anything on the inside of the box.

The second thing I noticed is the double row timing chain also

The third thing is that is has a Heaton high flow oil pump.

I am just fitting an 1100s gear box that Chris Zerial gave me and then perhaps sending the box to a mini gear box mec an anic - who does everyone suggest ????

I just had a 1275 rebuild - bore from 1293 to 1310 with pistons and rings supplied. Crank and bearing etc. Chemical clean, new cam bearings etc, new followers new oil pump etc. came to $900 but thats a country price.

The head was done 3 months earlier and the reconditioner refused to replace the seats (with unleaded ones) as a poofteenth of the seat is in the cool swish area and he was frightened the seats may fall out. He sais simply, buy better fuel and tip in lead replacement stuff. The head had new guides, a couple of better valves, a skim (as did the block) and a quick dip in the acid bath. and it is a great box.....

Mick, the story of those new timing gears is- the motor had a rattle, and it turned out to be the old chain & sprockets were toasted. Dean got Greig Malaure (Mini Classic) to fit that new one. Cost$BIG.

after a lot of hard work (sort of) on a very part time basis and time spent gathering bits and pieces, trips to europe, i have finally got the engine on the gearbox at GRs today. phew! sorry no pics. i was genuinely shocked to find i bought this motor in November 2005! Greig Malure came in today and asked me if this was still the same motor

i painted the block and rocker cover light blue. i wanted dark blue but i picked up the wrong can at the shop. have not painted the gearbox or the head as they were not available at the time.

I am yet to put the flywheel housing on because i lost the damn outrigger bearing i bought, thought i'd lost the outrigger bearing shell circlip, you know the one that goes in the flywheel housing, bought two clutch plates (doh), and i seem to have misplaced my 1275 primary gear. GR has to do a couple of valve seats otherwise he says the head is ready to go on. will do that week after next as he is dynoing engines all next week. mine will be dynoed the following week.

he will also have my flywheel machined by then

so i need to get
1. 1275 primary gear
2. outrigger bearing
3. weber gaskets
4. 45dcoe weber auxiliary chokes 4.5 or 3.5 (prefer 3.5 if i can )
5. filter material for the ramflo or socks for the (large) ram tubes (dyno + room in car to fit will decide, if the dyno shows a heap of difference, i may make room like Chong did)
6. balls for the inner CV joints ( i think i still have some driveshafts on a promise)
7. exhaust pipe and muffler

if anyone can help me with number 1 or number 4 over the weekend (Sunday preferably) please pm or call me on 0419 018 670.

engine in today

exhaust LCB on but not pipe and muffler, LH driveshaft in, RH driveshaft looked dodgy so may need new one (see my help post...), remote change to the KAD shifter is linked but needs mounting in the car and adjusting, firewall needs a tickle to clear the weber,

need to put a cowl on the radiator and get it in, install the fuel pump, install the fuel tank, install battery and brum plus then a few more things like the clutch cylinder, rollcage and seat to actually drive it

not long now though
oh and yes i know i had the thermo housing on the wrong way, its already fixed.

yeah i had the brake pipes rearranged at the front so i could drop the subframe without having to disconnect the brakes. i hate having to do that. not that i intend having to pull the subframe frequently, i just knew this would be ongoing development and restoration happening while trying to use it in the occasional event. the guy who did it for me stuck the brake light pressure switch on top of the master cylinder, and it just fits under the bonnet. (shameless plug for Penrith Brake & Clutch on Coreen Ave, but i don't know if the same guy is still there)
